Annual contributions of any amount from alumni have a significant impact on the University's rise in excellence. Annual gifts are an important factor in national rankings, which attract top students, faculty, and grants. Gifts to the University help to fill a gap of about $8,000 between the cost of tuition and the cost of educating a student at UM, enabling the University to achieve key priorities outlined in the provost's strategic plan, Accelerating Ambition.
Alumni annual gifts are a significant source of unrestricted support, gifts that are applied toward the most pressing needs across the University each year. They help meet urgent funding challenges that arise each year, which makes an immediate and tangible difference for current UM students.
Every day, University of Miami undergraduates count on scholarship gifts from UM alumni. Scholarships give bright young Hurricanes the chance to break through financial barriers and grasp the tremendous opportunity of a UM education.
From study abroad to sustainability, computer science to creative arts, the University of Miami offers more areas of study than any other private research university of comparable size. Expanding the on- and off-campus activities that foster intellectual and personal growth is a major priority for alumni annual contributions.
Graduate students are the next generation of leaders who will help solve some of society's most complex problems. Competition for top graduate students across the country is fierce, so providing the fellowships and stipends that attract these students is critical in maintaining a world-class university.
Initiated by Robert and Judi Prokop Newman, BBA '63 the Newman Alumni Loyalty Challenge aims to inspire other alumni to follow a longstanding tradition of sustained philanthropic support. Successfully meeting the challenge, including its interim milestones, will result in a $500,000 gift by the Newmans to support student scholarships at the University of Miami.
As a scholarship recipient while at UM, Judi Prokop Newman is grateful for the opportunities the University has afforded her. In 1963, as soon as she graduated, Judi started giving back, "just a little at first, then escalating over time," she said. Judi recently stated, "If I can provide at least one student the life-changing experience that I had, I will have accomplished my goal."
Gifts of any amount, made anywhere within the University, count towards our overall goal of renewing 10,700 alumni donors for fiscal year 2014. The Challenge will award $500,000 for student scholarships if three critical goals are accomplished:
• $125,000 will be awarded if 2,500 alumni renew by October 31, 2013.
• $125,000 will be awarded if 4,500 alumni renew by December 31, 2013.
• Finally, $250,000 will be awarded if 10,700 alumni renew by May 31, 2014.
If you donated last year, give a gift this fiscal year to be counted as a Newman Alumni Loyalty Challenge Donor. Make a gift today!
If you did not donate last year, consider making a gift of at least $10 per month for 12 consecutive months, ensuring that you are a loyal donor by stretching your giving over two fiscal years, FY14 (June 1, 2013 - May 31, 2014) and FY15 (June 1, 2014 - May 31, 2015), adding you to the ranks of Newman Alumni Loyalty Challenge Donors.
If you did not donate last year, there are three ways to become a Newman Alumni Loyalty Challenge Donor:
Contact us at 1-866-UMALUMS (862-5867) to make your credit card gift by phone.
Email us at email@example.com with subject line, Newman Challenge Donor, providing your name, best time of day to call, and phone number in the body of the email, so we may contact you to make your credit card gift.
Return the perforated response form from the Newman Challenge letter arriving via US Mail.
The challenges of today are too significant to ignore, and UM's capacity to address them is too promising to withhold. This is an exciting time to be a Miami Hurricane — we need your support to keep moving forward.

About James W. McLamore
As co-founder of the Burger King Corporation, James W. McLamore was a titan of business who believed in community service and philanthropy. He had a vision to build brighter futures for youngsters by promoting education in our communities. His impact at the University of Miami as chair of the Board of Trustees from 1980–1990 and also as the chair of UM’s historic $517.5 million Campaign for the University of Miami from 1984–1989 was enormous. We will forever be indebted to him for his leadership and exceptional tradition of generous support, which spanned nearly thirty years and enhanced numerous areas of our institution, thanks in part to his visionary commitment to the importance of unrestricted funds. Indeed, such was the extent of his influence that one of the University’s most prestigious distinctions, the James W. McLamore Outstanding Service Award, which recognizes a member of the University community who has gone above and beyond the call of duty in service to our institution, bears his name.
The impact of your annual gift is powerful. Gifts of any amount, to any area of the University, given for two or more consecutive fiscal years count toward Loyalty Society participation. Alumni donors will qualify for membership upon their second consecutive year of making a gift every fiscal year. (May 31-June 1)

After the incredible success of last year's GOLDstein Family Challenge, the Goldsteins are back to challenge young alumni again to show their love for the U! The #UGOLDrush presented by the Goldstein Family is a 49-hour online giving challenge seeking to find 500 G.O.L.D (Graduate Of Last Decade) alumni to make a gift between 12:00 p.m. EDT on Wednesday, May 12th and 1:00 p.m. EDT on Friday, May 14th. When this goal is reached, the Goldstein Family will make a $25,000 gift to support student scholarships.
In addition to helping UM complete this challenge by making a gift, young alumni can also be entered to win "golden nuggets" like free football tickets, Alumni Weekend & Homecoming packages, and more just by helping spread the word about this exciting campaign. Simply include #UGOLDrush in any post on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, or any other social media platform, and you will be entered for a chance to win one of these "golden nuggets". Each time you post using #UGOLDrush, you are entered for a chance to win; the more you share, the better chance you have to win!
For more information about the #UGOLDrush, please visit www.ugoldrush.com.
To make your gift to support the #UGOLDrush, visit www.miami.edu/UGOLD from May 14th to 16th and make your gift.

Young alumni like you rose to the occasion as never before and met the GOLDstein Family Challenge this past year! We surpassed our initial goal of 2013 donors on May 1st which resulted in the Goldsteins; Sandy, Cindy and their son Sean, donating $25,000 to scholarships. The generous Goldsteins then created a Bonus Round with a new goal of 2400 donors. Because of the amazing generosity shown by you and your peers, 2,821 young alumni answered the last call for gifts and another $10,000 was directed to scholarships! Combined with our School of Communication and School of Architecture Challenges, the University received $75,000 to support important student initiatives like scholarships, internships, and study abroad opportunities!
