Thank you for visiting the University of Miami Blackboard Course Web Site System. Your privacy is very important to us. This Privacy Statement describes how we collect, use and/or share information gathered by our websites.

Information We Collect
When you visit our websites, some information is collected electronically or by technology. For example, our log files maintain a record of who accessed the system and to varying degrees what they did on it. Identification may be by IP address (a unique identifier assigned to each computer on the Internet) and user name. Information within course sites can provide instructors with details of who has accessed the site, when the access took place, and what areas were accessed. Instructors have the option, when posting documents, to track who and when those documents have been viewed.

Our website uses a cookie to provide a continuous session. A cookie is a collection of information stored on your computer that usually includes a username and the current date and time or other user specific information. The session cookie for Blackboard is stored in memory, not on your computer. Your web browser (Netscape, Explorer, etc) allows you to be warned when cookies are being placed on your computer or to refuse all cookies. Not accepting or disabling cookies from our websites will prevent you from accessing our website.

Accounts are automatically created for every student and employee at the University of Miami. Information provided when creating the accounts, and therefore available on this system, includes full name, UM E-mail alias, birth date, UM ID number, and course enrollments.

Information You Provide
In addition to information collected by technology, some parts of our websites may ask you to provide personal information. You will know when you are sharing personal information with us because you will need to send a message, fill out a form or answer questions, and then submit this information to us. If you provide personal information to us, the information will be available to individuals managing your courses site and to system managers. The information will not be shared with other users or people other than those managing your course.

Our site uses on-line assessments. The results are stored on the server and made available to those people managing your course site as well as to system managers. The system is managed by individuals at the University of Miami as well as hosted by Blackboard, Inc.

Some of the information we collect or that you provide may be saved for a designated for an indefinite period of time, but we will not disclose the information to third parties or government agencies, unless required to do so by state or federal law, in support of University sponsored programs or activities, or to protect the integrity, safety, and security of our websites (see below for information about how to update or limit viewing of your information).

Course Web sites may contain links to other
non-University of Miami sites. The University of Miami is not responsible for the privacy practices and/or the content of such websites. Please be sure to check the individual privacy policies of those sites. The University of Miami is also not responsible for the privacy practices and/or content of the University of Miami's business partners and/or their websites, even if the University of Miami's brand appears on their page. The University of Miami is not responsible for any information collected by such websites.

Public Forums
Course Web sites may make forums, message boards, e-mail systems, and other communication services available to you. Please remember that any information that is disclosed by you or others in these areas may be viewable by other members of your class and thus becomes public information. You should exercise caution when deciding to disclose your personal information in these or other similar areas of our websites.

Children's Guidelines
The University of Miami does not knowingly collect online contact information from children under 13 years of age without prior parental consent or parental notification, which will include an opportunity for the parent to prevent use of the information and/or participation in the activity. In the absence of prior parental consent, online information will only be used to respond directly to the child's request. Such information will not be used for other purposes without prior parental consent. We do not distribute to third parties any personally identifiable information without prior parental consent. We do not give the ability to publicly post or otherwise distribute personally identifiable contact information without prior parental consent. We do not offer special games, prizes or other activities, to entice users to divulge more information than is needed to participate in the activity. We will, however, provide personal information collected about children if required by law, for example, to comply with a court order or a subpoena, or to protect the integrity, safety and security of our websites.

Course Web sites provide full information to those people managing your course site, but can limit access to your information from other students. Students may not opt out of receiving e-mail messages from the people managing their course Web sites.

The Blackboard system uses your privacy settings specified through the Registrarís office or on EASY to control whether you receive e-mail from other students and whether other students can view your e-mail address in the Course Roster, if a decision is made by the people managing your course site to make this information available. To change your privacy setting, go to EASY at and make the change, or contact the Registrarís office at or 305-284-2294.

Information provided by other systems, including the UM Registration System for students and the Human Resources system for faculty and employees, should be corrected on those systems by going to EASY at, or by contacting the Registrarís office at or 305-284-2294 for students, Faculty Affairs at or 305-284-3386 for faculty, or the Human Resources office at or 305-284-3798 for employees
. The changes will be updated on the Blackboard system through daily data feeds.
