BACKGROUND
The
University of
Miami/Jackson Memorial Burn Center is among the busiest and
best in
the nation. Established in 1960, it is now located
at Jackson's
Trauma Center. Over 300 patients are admitted
annually for
burn care and 1,000 are seen as outpatients in the
clinics, in
the emergency room, and in the rehabilitation areas of
the Burn
Service. The Center treats patients primarily form
Dade,
Broward, Monroe, and Palm Beach counties and
receives referrals
from all over the United States, the Caribbean,
Central
and South America. The Center is affiliated with the
University
of Miami School of Medicine and Jackson Memorial Medical
Center.
FUNCTION
The Burn
Center serves
burn victims with the most modern equipment available and is
staffed
by dedicated personnel committed to serving and improving
their lives.
The Center also provides ongoing public services in the area
of education
and prevention. Approximately 430,000 children have been
reached
by our burn prevention programs. Children are taught
what to do
if they are in danger of being burned by fire,
liquid, or
electricity. Snuffy, the wireless remote
controlled
robot, teaches kindergarten, first,
second,
and third grade students the principles of burn
prevention. A
second integral part of our prevention program is the "Learn
Not to
Burn" curriculum taught by the Fire Departments through
instructional
workshops. Elementary teachers use the material to teach
fire
and burn prevention in their classrooms.
