Since the Norman A. Whitten University Center
opened its doors in 1965, no space for student
programming, meetings
or offices has been added, despite the increased
demand and usage of the facility. Among peer private
institutions in the southeast, the University
of Miami ranks last in both square footage of
space per student and age of facility.
Currently, the University has hired WTW Architects
of Pittsburgh, PA and Miami-based Arquitectonica
for the pre-design phase of the new 75,000-square
foot student activity center, which will include
meeting rooms, a ballroom, programming space,
a student organization center, a student media
center, student services center, and lounges and
social spaces. In addition, the building will
include a new Rathskeller and landscaped patio
area facing Lake Osceola. The purpose, design,
and location of this exciting new facility will
allow the University of Miami to meet the needs
of today’s students and the entire University
community while providing a signature building
on campus.

and naming opportunities, contact: Norman C. Parsons
