Jorge M. Perez, a University of Miami trustee since
2000, received a master’s degree in planning from
the University of Michigan in 1976. Three years
later he founded The Related Group of Florida.
Today, the Miami-based development firm, which
specializes in multi-family housing and mixed-use
developments, has grown into one of the most
respected in the country. The Related Group ranks in
the top six largest condo developers in the country
and ranked #2 in revenue of Hispanic-owned
businesses in Florida. In recognition of his
business success, Mr. Perez was named Business
Leader of the Year by Miami Business magazine in
2001 and was the first South Florida business leader
to receive the Excelencia Award bestowed by
AmericaEconomia, a Dow Jones and Company publication
which recognizes leaders in Latin America. Mr.
Perez recently donated $1.25 million to create a new
Architecture Center at the School of Architecture.
Designed by world-renowned architect and town
planner, Leon Krier, the new Jorge M. Perez
Architecture Center is scheduled to open on the
Coral Gables campus in spring 2005.
