THE CEREMONY

Commencement is a special time for our graduates and guests. The University of Miami is committed to making all Commencement ceremonies and events accessible to those who need special accommodations. All Commencement ceremonies are held in the BankUnited Center. School and College receptions are held at various locations throughout campus.
SEATING

The doors will open beginning one hour prior to the published start time of the ceremony. Seating in the ceremony is open, general seating. We recommend that large groups of guests wishing to sit together arrive early. To accommodate all of our guests, the saving of seats will not be allowed. Handicapped-accessible areas are reserved for guests with special needs. There is access to the seating areas via an elevator in our Special Needs/VIP Lobby Entrance (located right across from the parking lot).

Note: The academic procession will enter the commencement site fifteen minutes prior to the start of the ceremony. We strongly recommend that all guests are seated by this time.

PRINTED PROGRAMS
Commencement programs will be available at the entrance to the ceremony for guests and in the seating areas reserved for graduating students and participating faculty. The program, which will be individualized for each ceremony, lists the name, degree, and proper accolades for each graduate. It also contains biographical information on honorary degree recipients and speakers as well as a detailed sequence of events for each ceremony.

At the commencement ceremonies, professional photographers from GradImages, will photograph all graduates as they walk across the stage. A complimentary copy will be mailed to graduates, along with instructions to order additional prints.

Personal photographs may be taken only before and after the ceremony. No one is permitted in the aisles during the ceremony. All graduates will have the opportunity to take photos in front of a banner with the University of Miami seal, located outside the BankUnited Center.

Faculty will assemble in the Hurricane-100 Room and Graduates will assemble in the FieldHouse adjacent to the BankUnited Center. At the lineup site, all candidates will be grouped by school and receive an index card on which to write their name, as they would like it to be read on stage.

PRESIDENT'S PROCESSION
The stage party, which includes the president and provost, will follow the academic procession. The presidential procession will enter the site promptly at the scheduled starting time, and the audience should stand and remain standing until the ceremony is declared open.

PRESENTATION OF DEGREES

Doctoral Degrees

The doctoral candidates will have their degrees conferred prior to the master's candidates in the graduate degree ceremony. Faculty advisors to the doctoral candidates will sit with their respective candidates. During the ceremony, the provost will introduce the dean of the Graduate School, who will present the candidates to the president. The dean will ask all candidates to rise for the conferral of their degrees. Following conferral, the dean will ask the graduates, along with their respective advisors, to come forward to the stage.

Graduates will proceed to the stage, where they will be hooded by pre selected faculty hooders. The advisors will stand beside the hooders. Once the candidate is hooded, the advisors will exit the stage and meet their candidate at the photography station at the back of the student seating area.

After each graduate is hooded, the graduate will be congratulated by the dean and a photograph. Graduates will exit the stage for a photograph with their advisor and return to their seats.

Master Degrees

Master degree candidates will wear their hoods during the entire ceremony. The conferral of master's degrees will follow the conferral of the doctoral degrees. During the ceremony, the provost will individually introduce the dean of each school to present the candidates for graduation to the president. The dean will ask the candidates to rise for the conferral of degrees. Graduates remain standing until all master's-level candidates are recognized.

Following the conferral of degrees, graduates will approach the stage to be congratulated. The announcer will call out each graduate's name. Then the graduate will walk toward the center of the stage for a photograph and to be congratulated by the president. Graduates will exit the stage and return to their seats.

Baccalaureate Degrees

For the undergraduate degree ceremony, during the conferral of the baccalaureate degrees, the provost will individually introduce the dean of each school to present the candidates to the president. The dean will ask candidates to rise at their seats for the conferral of degrees. Upon conferral, all graduates will move their tassels from the right side to the left side of their caps.

The graduates will be asked to approach the stage to be congratulated. The announcer will call out each graduate's name. The graduate will walk toward the center of the stage for a photograph and to be congratulated by the president. Graduates will exit the stage and return to their seats.
