The University of Miami has entered a new era in which it has staked its claim as one of America’s great research universities. Our efforts have resulted in the University’s greater visibility as a distinctive brand. Today the “U” stands for far more than success on the playing field—it also represents the finest in teaching, research, and patient care.

As part of a strategic communications plan to build on our excellence, we are introducing the University of Miami’s new visual identity program, which incorporates the split-U mark—the most well-known logo associated with the University of Miami. Indeed, the split-U is one of the most recognizable collegiate marks nationally and may well be the most ubiquitous graphic symbol throughout South Florida. Our bold new look is perhaps the first time an academic and health institution uses a symbol of its celebrated athletics program. I was skeptical at first, but since our extensive marketing research confirms that the "U" is identified with the entire University, we have decided to use it as our university-wide symbol.

By providing a unified image throughout the University and all schools, colleges, centers, institutes, and other units, we can capitalize on the power of our unique brand. Our new identity for the University will be on all new marketing materials and will be adapted for a full range of other uses, ranging from Web sites and brochures to T-shirts and notebooks.

The identity program has been in the works for the past year, but given the current economic climate and the need to conserve resources, we are phasing it in over time. Additional information on the system’s rollout will be announced by University Communications, which is managing use of the system. You can start promoting our new identity immediately by clicking here to get a copy of the primary signature to add to your e-mails.

The University of Miami is much more than an image—it is extraordinary people, new knowledge, exciting discoveries, compassionate care, and competitive athletics. Please join me in embracing this fresh identity, which will help reinforce these messages and promote our presence wherever people see the Orange and Green.
