To the University Community,

Nothing is more important than the health and safety of our University of Miami community. We have many programs and systems in place to ensure that our campuses are as safe as possible, and we are always looking at new ways to make them even more secure. A look at recent news headlines demonstrates the need for us to be vigilant.

In 2013 alone there have been nine school shootings in the United States, resulting in six deaths and ten injuries. Five of those shootings occurred at universities. The event last month at the University of Central Florida, a local home to friends and peers, underscores the need for readiness.

To help prepare the University for the possibility of an active shooter scenario, the Office of Emergency Management, in conjunction with the Department of Homeland Security, has constructed a suite of resources that includes guidelines and educational videos.

These resources provide students, faculty, and staff with basic and helpful information on how to respond during such an event. It is vitally important for everyone to familiarize themselves with these recommended guidelines. Please take five minutes to watch an instructional video at www.miami.edu/activeshooter. Knowing what to do can make the difference for you and those around you.
