December 12, 2013

Dear University of Miami Family,

Tis the season…

To be grateful for the wonderful people who embrace the U—students, faculty and staff, alumni, patients and their loved ones, and our committed network of supporters and friends.

We are united by a special kinship based on true respect and deep appreciation for the amazing work we do at the University of Miami each and every day. Thanks to your extraordinary dedication, 2013 was another momentous year at the University.

I'm especially moved by the very meaningful gestures we make in friendship for one another.

International Student and Scholar Services organized a special treat for international students who could not be with family on Thanksgiving. Many of you opened your homes and hearts to more than 65 students, who celebrated our national tradition in its truest sense. A few of the students’ stories were published in this article, and I’d like to share a couple of their recollections:

  • "The last part of the day was spent eating delicious cakes and desserts. We met new people, observed family celebrations during a big holiday, enjoyed tasty food, and just had fun!"
    – Irina Malova of Russia
  • "We talked about many things, including the history of Thanksgiving, American football, soccer, European countries, and so on. It was quite enjoyable to have a Thanksgiving dinner with an American family. At the end of the day, I was so happy and glad to have made new friends."
    – Sercan Demir of Turkey

It’s hard to believe the year is almost over, but time flies when you’re in great company. Let’s look forward to a fulfilling and not too challenging 2014.

May your holidays be filled with fellowship and joy,
