UM Researchers Identify New Gene Causing Blindness
Researchers led by geneticists at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine have identified a new gene that causes retinitis pigmentosa, a form of blindness, ending one South Florida family’s nearly 20-year search for what caused three of their four children to lose their sight. | more

UM Ranks High on Peace Corps Top 25 List
With 23 undergraduate alumni serving as Peace Corps volunteers around the world, the University of Miami has been ranked No. 21 on the agency’s annual list of “Top Peace Corps Volunteer Producing Colleges and Universities.” The ranking comes as the Peace Corps celebrates 50 years of sending American volunteers abroad to live and work in developing countries while tackling challenges such as AIDS education, information technology, and environmental preservation. | more

Center for Latin American Studies to Host ‘Égalité for All: Investing in Haiti’s Cultural Heritage’
The University of Miami’s Center for Latin American Studies and Florida International University’s Latin American and Caribbean Center will host a benefit community screening of the PBS-produced documentary Égalité for All: Toussaint Louverture and the Haitian Revolution on Thursday, February 17 in support of the universities’ Protecting Haitian Patrimony Initiative. | more

The University of Miami has announced the second dates for Employee Day Games presented by Verizon Wireless. Secure your seats now to see the men’s basketball team take on ACC opponent Clemson on Sunday, February 20 at 3:30 p.m. at BankUnited Center or the nationally ranked women’s team take on Wake Forest on Monday, February 21 at 7 p.m. in conjunction with Pink Zone. Ring Theatre to Spotlight Timeless Battle of the Sexes with Comedies ‘Big Love’ and ‘Lysistrata’
The age-old battle of the sexes comes to Coral Gables this February with two comedies at the University of Miami’s Jerry Herman Ring Theatre. Running in alternating performances from February 16-27, Lysistrata and Big Love are two boisterous comedies inspired by classic Greek theatre but spiced with enough contemporary flavors to tickle the taste buds of any audience.| more

    With health care reform continuing to be a hot topic of debate, hundreds of City of Coral Gables residents (top) concerned about the issue and how it will affect them turned out at the University of Miami’s Storer Auditorium on February 3 to hear what one of the nation’s top experts on health care had to say on the matter. UM President Donna E. Shalala (above), who was the nation’s longest-serving secretary of health and human services, gave them a perspective on the topic from every angle, as UM’s Collegetown Faculty Lecture Series got under way with an in-depth discussion on health care reform.
