Three Faculty Members Recognized for Scholarly Activity
An engineer who studies the properties of composites and their ability to make structures stronger and safer, a geneticist whose research has led to the discovery of genes associated with debilitating diseases like Alzheimer’s, and a chemist who is one of the pioneers in the burgeoning field of supramolecular photochemistry are recipients of the University of Miami 2011 Provost’s Award for Scholarly Activity. | more

Study Reveals Aerosol Plumes Downwind of the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill
Scientists from the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science were part of a national research team to find two plumes of oil-based pollutants downwind of the BP Deep Water Horizon oil spill. In a study published in a recent issue of the journal Science, the researchers offer new insights into the mechanism by which the crude oil traveled from the sea surface to the atmosphere. | more
'Breakthrough Medicine' is Back with Another Blitz
Breakthrough Medicine, the series that takes viewers inside a university-based health system and lets them share in the remarkable breakthroughs being made each day, is back with another blitz, this one featuring “Weight-Loss Surgery: Embarking on a Lifesaving Journey” on Saturday, March 19, as well as a new episode, “Kidney Transplant: The Story of a Brother’s Ultimate Gift,” airing on April 9. | more
Get Ready for the Biggest and Best UM Family Night with the Marlins
In appreciation of the dedication and outstanding work of the University’s employees, the president and provost will be hosting the Sixth Annual University of Miami Family Night with the Marlins on Saturday, April 23 at Sun Life Stadium. This year the Marlins will take on the Colorado Rockies, and the special post-game concert will feature El Gran Combo, the popular salsa band from Puerto Rico. | more

Women’s Soccer Places Three on All-ACC Academic Team

Three members of the University of Miami women’s soccer team have been named to the All-ACC Academic Team. Seniors Brittney Steinbruch and Brittney Macdonald earned the award for the fourth consecutive year, while junior Ashlee Burt has been named to the team for a second season. | more

Lowe Art Museum to Host Family Closing Celebration for Soriano Retrospective

The Lowe Art Museum will host a Family Closing Celebration for the Rafael Soriano exhibition on Sunday, March 27 at 1 p.m. This is the last opportunity to view the Rafael Soriano retrospective with the whole family. Adults can view the documentary film La Profundidad del Silencio (The Depth of Silence): An Intimate Portrait of the Cuban Painter Rafael Soriano by Jorge Moya, while the kids participate in an art activity. | more

    The dream of earning a college degree came a lot closer to reality on March 3 when a group of high-achieving University of Miami students received some $55,000 in scholarship funds during the Woodson Williams Marshall Association and UM Black Alumni Society Scholarship Reception. President Donna E. Shalala and many other UM administrators were on hand to show their support of the students.

    The University is streamlining the investment options available for faculty and staff in the 403(b) plans to comply with IRS regulations and to make investments easier for participants to manage. The new investment structure becomes effective on May 25.
