$20 Million Gift will Help UM Build New Student Activities Center
A $20 million lead gift from the Fairholme Foundation will help the University of Miami build a new 119,000-square-foot Student Activities Center, a state-of-the-art facility that will include programming space, a student organizations suite, retail outlets, and a new Rathskeller. | more

Alzheimer’s Disease Consortium Identifies New Risk Genes
In the largest study of its kind, researchers from a consortium that includes the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine have identified four new genes linked to Alzheimer’s disease. The deadline to save $10 on the Corporate Run/Walk registration fee has been extended one day. You have until 8 p.m. today, April 7, to submit your $25 registration fee at either the Herbert Wellness Center on the Coral Gables campus or the Medical Campus Wellness Center. | more

USpeak Concludes Season with ‘Mangrove’ Journal Launch
The 2010-11 USpeak season wraps up on Friday, April 15 with the launch of the print edition of Mangrove, the University of Miami’s undergraduate literary journal. Authors will help celebrate the 2011 edition by reading selections published in the journal, a collection of high-quality fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and art by current and recently graduated undergraduate students. | more

    Hollywood Legend Ernest Borgnine Visits UM
    Ernest Borgnine, the 94-year-old Academy Award-winning actor who has starred in such films as From Here to Eternity, The Poseiden Adventure, and Escape from New York, visited the University of Miami’s Cosford Cinema on April 1, participating in a Q&A following the sold-out screening of his film Another Harvest Moon.

    Five decades and more than 20,000 students since arriving at UM, Lester Goran, the English professor instrumental in launching the UM English department’s Creative Writing Program, has seen his impact travel far beyond the walls of the College of Arts and Sciences. On Friday, March 25, as part of The Goran Reading Series, launched to celebrate Goran’s continuing legacy, novelist Terrence Cheng, M.F.A. ’97, chair of the English department at Lehman College-CUNY, came to the Coral Gables campus to lead a master class and give a reading attended by his mentor, as well as other UM faculty, students, and alumni of the Department of English. | more
