Frost School community outreach program receives $1 million in funding

The University of Miami Frost School of Music’s Henry Mancini Institute has been awarded $500,000 by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation in conjunction with the 2010 Knight Arts Challenge. The grant, which has been matched with a $500,000 cash contribution by philanthropist and UM Trustee Adrienne Arsht, will be used to produce “HMI: Outbound,” a new community outreach program. | more

UM psychologist studies connection between female reproductive cycles and interaction with male kin

While previous research has shown that women in their most fertile phases become more attracted to certain qualities such as manly faces, masculine voices, and competitive abilities, a new study by University of Miami psychologist Debra Lieberman and colleagues offers an intriguing new insight into female sexuality, revealing that women also minimize contacts with their fathers when they are fertile. | more

UM researcher contributes to study that finds directions for kids’ medications are inconsistent

Researchers who examined 200 of the best-selling cough/cold, allergy, analgesic, and gastrointestinal over-the-counter liquid medications for children found high levels of variability and inconsistencies in medication labeling and measuring devices, according to a study that will appear in the December 15 issue of JAMA, The Journal of the American Medical Association. | more

    The University of Miami’s Linda Ray Intervention Center, part of the Department of Psychology, received the Excellence in School Readiness Programming Award from The Children’s Trust of Miami-Dade County during the organization’s annual Champion for Children award ceremony on November 19. The award recognized the center’s Project Hand-N-Hand initiative, which provides parents with the tools needed to support their children’s development through the use of play and developmentally appropriate activities.
