    With David Satcher, the 16th surgeon general of the United States, in attendance as well as several former NFL players and two Miller School physicians, UM was the site on December 6 of a forum addressing mental health challenges faced not only by athletes but also by people in the community. Above, Lee Kaplan, left, chief of the UHealth Sports Medicine Division and associate professor of orthopaedic surgery, and UM neurologist Kester Nedd, an expert in the area of traumatic brain injury, stand in front of the ProCap, a protective padding that was placed on the top of the helmet worn by former Buffalo Bills safety Mark Kelso to help prevent concussions.

    UM adopts Nursing Mothers Policy
    In support of and in compliance with recent changes in the Fair Labor Standards Act, the University of Miami has adopted a policy for nursing mothers. It is vital to provide new mothers with private, safe, and accessible locations where they are able to express milk for nursing infants. The new Nursing Mothers Policy provides guidelines for offering a workplace that supports a working mother’s decision to breastfeed and prohibits discrimination and harassment of those who exercise this right. | more
