Challenge Grant Will Help Rosenstiel School Acquire Research Helicopter
A $700,000 challenge grant from the Miami-based Batchelor Foundation will support the Rosenstiel School’s acquisition of a state-of-the-art research helicopter, which will allow scientists to make one-of-a-kind environmental observations near the interface between the Earth’s surface and atmosphere. | more

Women’s Basketball Team Launches ‘Strive for Five’ Promotion
UM Athletics is set to begin the “Strive for Five” promotion in an effort to set the attendance record for a women’s basketball game and raise money for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund. The Hurricanes will sell $1 advance tickets for the game against Florida State on Sunday, February 19 at 3:30 p.m. in BankUnited Center, with the goal of setting an attendance record of 5,000 and raising $5,000 for breast cancer research. | more

UM-FSU Men’s Basketball Matchup Designated Employee Day Game
The UM vs. Florida State men’s basketball game slated for Sunday, February 26 at BankUnited Center has been designated the 2012 Verizon Wireless Employee Day game. The promotion includes a pregame tailgate party for all participants as well as a host of other activities. The offer includes two tickets and two tailgate party passes for $5, or four tickets and four tailgate party passes for $10. | more

    Panelists Address U.S. Immigration Policy
    Long a polarizing issue in the United States, immigration took center stage on the University of Miami’s Coral Gables campus on February 6, when a panel of experts convened for a lively debate on the controversial topic, addressing everything from border security to providing a pathway to citizenship for undocumented aliens who have lived and established ties in the U.S. Above, from left, Thomas “Mack” McLarty, who served as chief of staff, counselor to the president, and special envoy for the Americas under President Bill Clinton; Michael Chertoff, U.S. secretary of homeland security from 2005 to 2009; Carlos M. Gutierrez, secretary of the U.S. Department of Commerce from 2005 to 2009; Antonia Hernandez, CEO of the California Community Foundation and former president and general counsel of the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund; and Pulitzer Prize-winning Miami Herald journalist Andrés Oppenheimer.

    Scientific Meeting Attracts World’s Top Ophthalmologists
    Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, the nation’s No. 1-ranked eye hospital and part of UHealth – University of Miami Health System, began its golden anniversary year by hosting a global scientific meeting February 2-4. Nearly 650 ophthalmologists from around the world attended, including 300 Bascom Palmer alumni. UM President Donna E. Shalala and Miller School of Medicine Dean Pascal J. Goldschmidt were among those present at a celebration dinner for attendees at the Biltmore Hotel. | more

    This seminar, sponsored by the Faculty and Staff Assistance Program, provides an overview of the real estate tax calculation process. Gerardo “Jerry” Gomez, special projects administrator for the Miami-Dade County Finance Department, will help participants decipher their tax notices and will review available options for managing current- and future-year payments. | more

    Art Exhibition Celebrates Black History Month

    The College of Arts and Sciences’ Department of Art and Art History and Africana Studies Program present “Slavery to Self Determination,” an art exhibition celebrating Black History Month. The show, curated by international art curator Ludlow Bailey, runs through March 2 at the CAS Gallery. The exhibition, which is free and open to the public, is a visual display about the spiritual journey of five African Diaspora artists in search of enlightenment, authenticity, and self-determination in a vastly complicated and challenging world. | more
