Study Links Dust to Increased Glacial Melting, Ocean Productivity
A University of Miami-led study has established a link between large dust storms on Iceland and glacial melting. Published in the March 2 issue of the journal Science, the study found that dust is both accelerating glacial melting and contributing important nutrients to the surrounding North Atlantic Ocean. | more
Manakin Birds Associate with Close Relatives to Enhance Mating Success
In a study that sheds new light on the courtship rituals of some birds, University of Miami evolutionary biologist J. Albert Uy and collaborators have found that some male manakin birds are better at attracting females if they gather with close male kin rather than distant relatives. | more

John L. Bixby Appointed Vice Provost for Research
John L. Bixby, professor in the Departments of Molecular and Cellular Pharmacology and Neurological Surgery at the Miller School of Medicine and senior associate dean for graduate and postdoctoral studies, has been appointed vice provost for research, assuming a major role in which he will help shape UM’s research mission. | more

    Debating Changes in the Arab World
    “Changes in the Arab World: Implications for Israel and Western Security” was the topic of discussion at a UM Global Affairs Lecture on March 1. The event, held at UM’s Sue and Leonard Miller Center for Contemporary Judaic Studies, featured a panel discussion with José María Aznar, center, former president of Spain, and several founding members of the Friends of Israel Initiative that he chairs. UM President Donna E. Shalala moderated the discussion.

    Naval Community Turns Out for Screening of ‘Act of Valor’
    With former and active-duty Navy SEALs in attendance, UM screened the action flick Act of Valor on February 21 at the Cosford Cinema. Made in collaboration with the U.S. Navy, the film stars real-life SEALs in sequences filmed with live ammo. The screening raised almost $9,000, with 100 percent of the proceeds going to the Navy SEAL Foundation, an organization that provides immediate and ongoing support to the Naval Special Warfare community and their families.
