Study Links Dust to Increased Glacial Melting, Ocean Productivity
A University of Miami-led study has established a link between large dust storms on Iceland and glacial melting. Published in the March 2 issue of the journal Science, the study found that dust is both accelerating glacial melting and contributing important nutrients to the surrounding North Atlantic Ocean. | more |

Debating Changes in the Arab World
“Changes in the Arab World: Implications for Israel and Western Security” was the topic of discussion at a UM Global Affairs Lecture on March 1. The event, held at UM’s Sue and Leonard Miller Center for Contemporary Judaic Studies, featured a panel discussion with José María Aznar, center, former president of Spain, and several founding members of the Friends of Israel Initiative that he chairs. Naval Community Turns Out for Screening of ‘Act of Valor’
With former and active-duty Navy SEALs in attendance, UM screened the action flick Act of Valor on February 21 at the Cosford Cinema. Made in collaboration with the U.S. Navy, the film stars real-life SEALs in sequences filmed with live ammo. The screening raised almost $9,000, with 100 percent of the proceeds going to the Navy SEAL Foundation, an organization that provides immediate and ongoing support to the Naval Special Warfare community and their families.
