UM Tops $170 Million in Fundraising for FY 2011
Bolstered by significant increases in donations from alumni and parents, the University of Miami closed out its fiscal year with a nearly 8 percent increase in fundraising, surpassing the $170 million mark despite a still-sluggish economy that has seen philanthropy decrease in certain areas around the nation. | more

NSF Summer Research for Undergraduates a Success
The Graduate School recently hosted nine students for the National Science Foundation-funded Summer Research Experience for Undergraduates. The students, who came from as far as the University of Buffalo, were paired with University of Miami faculty and spent ten weeks working on research initiatives in the social, behavioral, and economic sciences. In its sixth year at UM, the program gives students the opportunity to test drive graduate school by analyzing data in labs alongside UM graduate students and presenting their work at a conference-style session at the end of the summer. | more

MILLER SCHOOL OF MEDICINE
New Surgical Residency Program Approved at Regional Campus
The University of Miami Miller School of Medicine has received approval for the first allopathic surgical residency program in Palm Beach County. The new five-year program at the University of Miami Regional Campus in Palm Beach County was approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education and will be implemented in close collaboration with JFK Medical Center in Atlantis, where it will be based. | more

University Website Will Test Alert Messaging August 3
The University will conduct a routine test of its emergency Web communications resources that will briefly affect the way information is displayed on the top-tier of the University's website on Wednesday, August 3 from 9-11 p.m. EST. The website will still be operational during the test and messaging will clearly indicate that the alert is only for test purposes.     President Hosts Debt Discussion on PBS
    As the debt ceiling debate rages on, families across America are worried about how spending reductions could negatively affect their jobs and programs they depend on.     ULearn, the University of Miami’s online learning environment, has a new look and some important new features, including several user-requested upgrades. Early August’s Phase I updates include compatibility with multiple browsers; a live training events calendar with daily, weekly, monthly, or agenda view options; and an easy option for adding trainings you register for into your Outlook calendar. | more
