Grant Aims to Boost Suicide Prevention Programs for Students
Funded by a three-year grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, UM Unites to Prevent College Suicide by Transforming Campus Culture is a new initiative designed to increase awareness of the suicide risk among college students, the warning signs, and, most important, the availability of resources to help and the need to intervene. | more

Ring Theatre Continues Exciting Season with ‘Fifty*Four*Forever’
The Department of Theatre Arts continues its exciting season this November with the musical Fifty*Four*Forever, conceived and directed by nine-time Tony Award winner Tommy Tune. Tune has also received eight Drama Desk Awards, the 2003 Presidential National Medal of Arts, and his own star on Hollywood’s legendary Walk of Fame. Written by Mark Saltzman, the musical play takes place in New York City, where Studio 54 becomes a magical disco that everyone clamors to get into. | more

Photography Exhibition at the Lowe Provides Insight to Life in Contemporary China
The Lowe Art Museum presents 150 photographic works by seven photographers from mainland China in the exhibition China: Insights, on view November 12 through January 15, 2012. The artists explore the relationship between contemporary photography and visual culture by undertaking the creation of a long-term documentation of one or more aspects of Chinese culture that reflect something vital about China now. | more

Shenise Johnson Named to AP Preseason All-America Team
University of Miami senior guard Shenise Johnson, who helped lead the women’s basketball team to an ACC regular-season title last season, is one of five players named to the Associated Press Preseason All-America Team.

    Hurricanes Homecoming
    With class reunions, a concert, educational activities, and more, the University of Miami celebrated another successful Alumni Weekend and Homecoming, held November 4-6. On Friday Stanford Drive on the Coral Gables campus came alive with a parade that featured grand marshal Maggie Rodriguez, B.S.C. '91, former co-anchor of the CBS television program The Early Show, and Sebastian the Ibis (top) as well as the spirited music of the Band of the Hour (above). That same night, a fireworks display lit up the shores of Lake Osceola as students, alumni, and visitors enjoyed UM homecoming traditions.

    Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice Speaks at UM
    The first African-American woman to become U.S. secretary of state, Condoleezza Rice spoke on the University of Miami campus on November 3 as part of the Charles E. Cobb Leadership Lecture Series in collaboration with Books & Books. During the event, which was conducted in an interview format with UM President Donna E. Shalala asking questions, Rice discussed everything from 9/11 and the war on terror to immigration, education, and Latin America. | more

    University of Miami student scholarship recipients gathered at the Robert and Judi Prokop Newman Alumni Center on November 2 for the annual luncheon that celebrates the generosity of donors who are making their dream of a college education possible.     Pick Up Thanksgiving Delicacies at the Well ’Canes Farmers Market
    With Thanksgiving only days away, University of Miami employees, students, and neighbors can find many of the culinary selections they need for the holiday right on UM’s Coral Gables campus. For the rest of this month, the Well ’Canes Farmers Market, an initiative of the Office of Human Resources and UM Student Government, will be open on Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the Foote University Green between the Richter Library and the post office. | more
