With $14.2 Million in New Grants, Researchers Hope to Improve Treatment for Pediatric Heart Disease
Miller School of Medicine pediatric researchers have been awarded two multicenter grants totaling more than $14.2 million to identify genetic mutations associated with pediatric cardiomyopathy and develop better and more targeted treatment for children diagnosed with one of the rare but devastating diseases of the heart muscle. | more |

‘Absurd Celebration’ Continues with a New Production of a Piñera Classic
“Absurd Celebration: The First International Festival of Virgilio Piñera’s Theatre” continues at the University of Miami with Una Caja de Zapatos Vacía (An Empty Shoebox) from September 7 to 9 at the Jerry Herman Ring Theatre. Produced by E.G. Productions, the play is one of five being performed at the Ring this semester in celebration of the centenary of the controversial Cuban playwright’s birth. | more
A Theatrical Thunderbolt: Cuban Playwright Virgilio Piñera in His Centenary
Curated by Lillian Manzor, associate professor in the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures, this display at the Cuban Heritage Collection is part of the University of Miami’s homage to the theatrical innovations of the Cuban playwright on the 100th anniversary of his birth. The exhibition focuses on Piñera’s theatrical production in Greater Cuba with a special emphasis on the plays staged in the United States. It includes materials such as original playbills, photographs, stage and costume designs, and other theater ephemera. | more

Rocking the Vote
Excited over the prospect of voting in their first presidential election, University of Miami students thronged to the University Center Rock on August 30 to register to vote—the first step in a process to becoming “engaged and educated citizens,” said Alessandria San Roman, executive secretary for UM Student Government, who helped coordinate last Thursday’s Get Out the Vote and TurboVote kickoff event. Several students registered to vote through the Get Out the Vote initiative, with voter registrations continuing every Tuesday and Wednesday in the UC Breezeway. Meanwhile, as part of the Knight Foundation-funded TurboVote effort, students can request voter registration forms and absentee ballots, as well as receive email and text messages about upcoming elections—all through one website. | more |
