UM Trustee’s Challenge Grant Matches Law Scholarship Donations
To help offset the rising cost of legal education, University of Miami trustee Wayne Chaplin, J.D. ’82, has made a generous contribution to the School of Law, creating the Chaplin Challenge Grant, which will match, dollar for dollar, each new eligible contribution made to new or existing scholarship funds between September 1 and December 31 of this year, as long as funds are available. | more

Sports Legends Gather to Defeat Paralysis
The 27th Annual Great Sports Legends Dinner, held September 24 at the Waldorf=Astoria in New York, raised nearly $18 million for The Buoniconti Fund to Cure Paralysis, the fundraising arm of The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis. The fundraising total will contribute to a $40 million pledge made by the Buoniconti Fund to the University of Miami’s Momentum2 campaign. | more

    Actor/director Robert Townsend, who rose to stardom in the 1990s by producing and starring in movies such as Hollywood Shuffle, Meteor Man, and The Five Heartbeats, screened his newest movie, In The Hive, starring Loretta Divine and the late Michael Clarke Duncan, at the University of Miami’s Bill Cosford Cinema on September 25. | more

    Pizza with a Purpose
    For youngsters participating in the University of Miami’s Mini ’Canes Recreational Sports Camp, pizza is not only a tasty treat but a pie with a purpose, teaching them that it is better to give than receive. Each summer Mini ’Canes campers donate the profits from their biweekly pizza lunches to the United Way of Miami-Dade County. This year campers raised $2,148, increasing the total donated over the past nine years to $22,856. | more

    Ride for a Cause: Dolphins Cycling Challenge Special Offer for UM Employees
    The University of Miami is partnering with the Miami Dolphins in the Dolphins Cycling Challenge to “tackle cancer one mile at a time.” The two-day event, scheduled for November 3 and 4, features six different bicycle routes, with 100 percent of the funds raised by the riders benefiting Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center.
