Cardiac and Pulmonary Researchers Team Up to Test Stem Cell Therapy for Fatal Lung Disease
Inspired by the pioneering research of Miller School colleague Joshua Hare, Marilyn K. Glassberg, professor of medicine and surgery, has won approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to conduct the first U.S. clinical trial of mesenchymal stem cells as a potential therapy for patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. | more

    A Grassroots Rally with President Obama
    With the November election less than a month away, President Barack Obama returned to the University of Miami on October 11, again showcasing his plans to improve the economy and create jobs during a Grassroots Event at the BankUnited Center. Obama energized the more than 9,000 people, many of them UM students, who attended the rally, telling them that he needed their support to win re-election. It was the president’s second visit to UM in the past 21 days.     Conference Examines Solutions to Workforce Housing Challenges
    Leveraging public-private partnerships, reducing regulations, building more transit-oriented housing, and easing credit terms for borrowers were just some of the solutions presented in Miami on October 4 to help resolve the challenges in workforce housing—affordably priced homes in close proximity to the workplace for workers essential to communities. The recommendations came from two former Housing and Urban Development secretaries as well as current and former leaders of such organizations as the Bipartisan Policy Center, the Consumer Federation of America, and Habitat for Humanity, at “Workforce Housing in the New Economy,” a conference hosted by the University of Miami School of Business Administration, School of Architecture, and Office of Civic and Community Engagement.     UM to Launch New Staff Performance Management System
