Spinning for a Cause: DCC Spin-a-Thon Raises Funds for Cancer Research
More than 100 University of Miami students and employees donned workout clothes and sneakers on October 23 to pedal, pant, and perspire for a worthwhile cause: defeating cancer. The Dolphins Cycling Challenge Spin-a-Thon, held in the atrium of the Herbert Wellness Center, raised funds for UM’s Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center and served as a precursor to the much-larger DCC charity road event that takes place November 2-3. | more

Young Engineers at Work

Making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich can be as easy as slicing bread—under normal circumstances, that is. But add to the process the challenge of having to compete against someone else to make the most sandwiches in 20 minutes, and the experience turns into a high-pressure moment. That’s what 20 youngsters from different middle and high schools in Miami-Dade County experienced last Friday on the University of Miami campus as part of a daylong event that taught them about different engineering processes, including the assembly line method. The event was hosted by students in UM’s chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers. | more

Two New Exhibitions to Debut at Lowe Art Museum
The Lowe Art Museum debuts two new exhibitions in November. “Beauty Beyond Nature” presents more than 70 of Paul Stankard’s intricately flame-worked still-life sculptures encased in clear crystal from the Robert M. Minkoff Collection. “?#@*$%! the Mainstream: The Art of DIY Self Expression” presents 123 fanzines—self-published journals created by “fans” of anything from science fiction authors to bands to literary genres—from Special Collections at the University of Miami Libraries. Both exhibitions run November 2 through January 5.
