UM Dedicates Kornspan Study Lounge
As students at the University of Miami’s School of Law in the late 1980s, Scott and Susan Fleischner Kornspan enjoyed interacting with undergraduate and graduate students—which was easily done with the law school’s location on UM’s Coral Gables campus. Now, the alumni couple’s generosity—combined with their belief in the power of an excellent education and their affinity for students from freshmen to post-grads has resulted in a new academic gathering spot: the Scott and Susan Fleischner Kornspan Study Lounge. Located on the first floor of the new Student Activities Center, the study lounge is open 24-7.

When Danielle Press was severely injured in a boating accident off Key Biscayne and rushed to the Ryder Trauma Center the afternoon of September 14, doctors weren’t sure she would live. A month later, she made medical history when Miller School of Medicine/Jackson Memorial Hospital surgeons performed the world’s first nerve graft using a combination of Press’ own nerve and Schwann cells to repair her severely injured sciatic nerve. | more |

Debate Team Rises to No. 8 in National Rankings
On the wave of another outstanding tournament performance at Vanderbilt University this month, the University of Miami Debate Team rose to No. 8 in the National Debate Tournament Rankings, up from No. 11 in the previous ranking. UM currently leads traditional powerhouses Northwestern, Harvard, Vanderbilt, Emory, and more than 100 other schools, trailing only No. 5 Wake Forest in the Southeast region. | more |

Two New Exhibitions Debut at the Lowe Art Museum
The Lowe Art Museum has debuted two new exhibitions in November. “Beauty Beyond Nature” presents more than 70 of Paul Stankard’s intricately flame-worked still-life sculptures encased in clear crystal from the Robert M. Minkoff Collection. “?#@*$%! the Mainstream: The Art of DIY Self Expression” presents 123 fanzines—self-published journals created by “fans” of anything from science fiction authors to bands to literary genres—from Special Collections at the University of Miami Libraries. Both exhibitions run through January 5.
