A day after six same-sex couples filed suit in Miami-Dade County for the right to marry, one of their lawyers and the School of Law launched a timely course, “Marriage Equality: Practical Implications for a Post-DOMA Landscape” that will explore the rapidly evolving implications of the U.S. Supreme Court decision overturning the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act that allowed states to refuse to recognize same-sex marriages. | more |

Bascom Palmer Eye Institute Researchers Pioneer Treatment for Genetic Vision Defect
A research team led by ophthalmology professor John Guy has pioneered a novel technological treatment for Leber Hereditary Optic Neuropathy, an inherited genetic defect that causes rapid, permanent, and bilateral loss of central vision in people of all ages, but primarily men between 20 and 40. | more

UM Osher Lifelong Learning Institute Receives $1 Million Endowment Gift
The Bernard Osher Foundation has awarded a $1 million endowment to the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of Miami in recognition of the program’s efforts to extend membership and further develop stimulating learning opportunities for Miami residents aged 50 and older. Serving nearly 600 members, the program offers more than 200 courses both on and off campus. | more |

Lauryn Williams Named to U.S. Olympic Team
Lauryn Williams, the former University of Miami track star who previously competed in three Summer Olympics as a sprinter, was among six women named to the U.S. Olympic bobsled team, which qualifies Williams for her first Winter Olympics. ‘Finished in Beauty’ and ‘Pueblo to Pueblo’ Debut at Lowe Art Museum
The Lowe Art Museum debuts two new exhibitions this month. Featuring 19 examples of Navajo wearing blankets, “Finished in Beauty: Navajo Weaving from the Permanent Collection” examines three categories of these beautiful, hand-woven works of art: the chief blanket, women’s garments, and the sarape, all drawn from the Lowe’s Alfred I. Barton Collection of Native American Art. “Pueblo to Pueblo: The Legacy of Southwest Indian Pottery” consists of 74 Pueblo Indian pottery vessels and supporting materials, dating from the mid-19th to the mid-20th centuries and illustrating the remarkable variety of pottery created during that very dynamic time of transformation. Both exhibitions run though March 23. |
