CIBER to Receive $2 Million to Enhance the Nation’s Success Abroad
The U.S. Department of Education has awarded UM’s Center for International Business Education and Research more than $1 million over four years to continue strengthening U.S. competitiveness. One of only 17 universities in the nation and the only one in Florida to receive CIBER funding this year, UM will match the grant, bringing new program funding to more than $2 million. | more |

Leukemia Specialist Receives Pap Corps Endowed Professorship
Ronan T. Swords, the director of the Leukemia Program at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, has received the Endowed Professorship in Leukemia from The Pap Corps: Champions for Cancer Research, the volunteer organization that to date has donated more than $51 million to Sylvester for cancer research, including this year’s record-setting $4.5 million. | more |

James G. Stavridis, a retired 4-star U.S. Navy admiral who led the NATO Alliance in global operations as Supreme Allied Commander from 2009 to 2013 and now heads the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University, will deliver this year’s Cobb Leadership Lecture at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, November 13. Duke Johnson continued his assault on the UM record books, running for 177 yards to surpass Edgerrin James for second on the Hurricanes' all-time rushing list, as Miami routed the North Carolina Tar Heels 47-20 on Saturday at Sun Life Stadium. The Hurricanes paid homage to their past, enshrining Russell Maryland and Jerome Brown in the team's Ring of Honor and honoring Jim Kelly as the headline attraction of homecoming weekend. | more |

Student-Athletes Excel in Latest NCAA Graduation Success Rate Report
Bolstered by perfect marks from seven teams, the athletics program posted a score of 92 percent in the latest NCAA’s Graduation Success Rates, continuing a trend of academic achievement among its student-athletes. Miami’s score ranks eighth among all Football Bowl Subdivision institutions.

Perryman Named Butkus Award Semifinalist
For the second consecutive season, Denzel Perryman is a semifinalist for the Butkus Award, given annually to the nation’s top linebacker. The 2014 Preseason All-ACC selectee could become only the second Hurricane to win the coveted award, joining Dan Morgan who claimed it in 2000. | more |

Homecoming and ’Canes Spirit Day Unite the U in Pride
Floats, fireworks, food trucks, and a resounding football victory helped make Homecoming and Alumni Weekend memorable for thousands of alumni, students, faculty, and staff. Reaching a crescendo on Halloween night with a pyrotechnics display, boat-burning ceremony, and parade featuring Hurricanes football great and cancer survivor Jim Kelly (top photo, with wife Jill) as grand marshal, the weeklong slate of activities included a Hurricanes Help the Hometown day of service, Homecoming king and queen competition, blood drive, and more—all under the theme “Animate Your Story,” which colored Disney’s Pixar Animation with ’Cane spirit. Celebrated across the University last Wednesday, ’Canes Spirit Day also heightened the excitement with such fun activities as a dunk contest that pitched Ricardo Hall (above), dean of students, into a tank of water on the Coral Gables campus’s Foote Green. Iron Arrow Expands the Tribe to 31 New Members
David Birnbach, vice provost for faculty affairs and director of the University of Miami-Jackson Memorial Hospital Center for Patient Safety, thought he was meeting with Provost Thomas J. Leblanc when he heard the beat of the Iron Arrow drum last Thursday. “It never dawned on me that they were here for me,’’ said Birnbach, one of 31 students, faculty, staff, and alumni tapped for the University’s highest honor. “I was at first shocked, then thrilled, and ultimately humbled by the great honor.”
