Research Suggests Caribbean Soft Corals Can Resist Acidification
A new study on tropical shallow-water soft corals known as gorgonians found that the species were able to calcify and grow under elevated carbon dioxide concentrations, suggesting that they may be more resilient to the ocean acidification changes expected to occur as a result of climate change. | more |

Hundreds Honor an Icon at the First Edna C. Shalala 5K Run/Walk
Inaugurating the Edna C. Shalala 5K Run/Walk, more than 900 people raced, jogged, or walked across the University of Miami campus Saturday to honor the legacy of UM President Donna E. Shalala’s mother and benefit the Edna C. Shalala Women’s Athletics Fund, which was established on the occasion of her 100th birthday. An accomplished lawyer, nationally ranked amateur tennis player, and avid supporter of women’s athletics, Mother Shalala, as she was affectionately known, passed away December 2 at age 103. Architecture Students Help Kinetic Sculptures Take Flight
UM’s David Aldana was among 13 School of Architecture students who helped assemble one of Dutch artist Theo Jansen’s wind-powered creatures that roved South Beach during Art Basel. Professor Adib Cure organized the students’ participation with The Peabody Essex Museum of Salem and Swiss watchmaker Audemars Piguet, which says Jansen’s beach animals mirror the precision and technological mastery at the heart of its watchmaking tradition. |
