An Elite Club: Lauryn Williams Becomes Fifth Olympian to Medal in Summer and Winter Games

UM alum Lauryn Williams, the former track and field superstar who won gold as a member of the 2012 Summer Olympics 100 meter relay team and silver in the 100 meters at the 2004 games in Athens, claimed silver with Elana Meyers in women’s bobsled in Sochi, becoming only the fifth athlete in Olympic history to medal in both the summer and winter games. | more

Celebrate the U’s New Outdoor Fitness Court at Today’s Dedication

Faculty and staff are invited to a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the University’s new UMove outdoor fitness court at 4 p.m. on Monday, February 24, just north of the Patti and Allan Herbert Wellness Center, at the edge of the intramural fields. A Student Government initiative, the court consists of combination bars and seven resistance stations and is open to anyone with a valid UM ID. | more

Savanah Leaf and Emani Sims Named to 2013 All-ACC Academic Volleyball Team
Standouts on the volleyball court and in the classroom, teammates Savanah Leaf and Emani Sims were named to the 2013 All-ACC Academic Volleyball team. Leaf, who led the ’Canes with 442 kills, seventh most in UM history for a single season, is making her second appearance on the roster. Sims, who led the team with 153 blocks this season, averaging a team-high 1.32 blocks per set, is making her third. | more
UM to Mark National Girls and Women in Sports Day with Free Youth Clinic
In honor of the 28th Annual National Girls and Women in Sports day, UM will host a free youth sports clinic for girls on Sunday, March 2 at 11 a.m. in the BankUnited Center Fieldhouse. UM student-athletes from track and field, soccer, rowing and volleyball, as well as the cheerleading and dance teams, will interact with girls in the seventh grade and below, teaching them skills from their respective sports. | more

Emilio Estefan Film on Nick and Marc Buoniconti's Struggle to Cure Paralysis Premieres at the Miami International Film Festival
Unbreakable Bond, a film by Grammy-winning producer Emilio Estefan, documents NFL Hall of Famer Nick Buoniconti and his son, Marc’s nearly three-decade struggle to find a cure for spinal cord injuries at the University’s Miami Project to Cure Paralysis. It will debut at the 31st Miami International Film Festival at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 11, at the Olympia Theater at The Gusman Center for the Performing Arts. Faculty and staff may purchase tickets online directly from the film festival. | more

Quadruple Amputee Travis Mills Brings His Message and Movie to the Cosford Cinema
Army Staff Sgt. Travis Mills, who was gravely wounded while serving in Afghanistan, and his family will visit the University of Miami on Monday, March 3, to show his documentary, “Travis: A Soldier’s Story,” which chronicles his journey through injury, recovery and rehabilitation. The 7 p.m. screening will be preceded by a reception at 6 p.m. and followed by a Q&A at 8:15 p.m. Tickets are $35 and available online.
