‘Gear’ Up to Fight Cancer: Dolphins Cycling Challenge to Be Held February 7 and 8

The University of Miami and Miami Dolphins are once again taking their fight against cancer to the streets when they team up on February 7 and 8, 2015 for Dolphins Cycling Challenge V, which benefits the critical lifesaving mission of Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center. Rides will range from 13 to 170 miles, and UM will pay all registration fees for faculty, staff, and students who register as part of Team UM Sylvester by Thursday, July 31. | more

Joanna Weremijewicz, a biology Ph.D. student, has received a Doctoral Dissertation Improvement Grant from the National Science Foundation to support her research on fungi that help plants absorb nutrients. Also supporting her: students at Richmond Heights Middle School, who she enlisted to determine if certain plants benefit more than others when connected by these fungi. | more

Frost Online, the Frost School of Music’s newly integrated online master’s program, has launched its first Massive Open Online Course, in Music Entrepreneurship, which will allow students to try online learning risk-free as the first step toward obtaining a degree. For the first time since 2009, the Miami Hurricanes and Florida Gators will meet on the hardwood as both schools have agreed to a home-and-home men’s basketball series. Florida will host the first game November 17, while Miami will host the return game at BankUnited Center during the 2015-16 season. | more

Zack Collins Named National Freshman of the Year by 'Baseball America'
Freshman sensation Zack Collins, whose 11 home runs and 54 RBIs ranked first and second, respectively, in the Atlantic Coast Conference last season, has been named National Freshman of the Year by Baseball America—an honor that comes on the heels of the slugger earning a coveted roster spot on the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team.
