Join Team Sylvester by July 31, and UM Will Pay Your DCC Registration Fees
The University and Miami Dolphins will once again take their fight against cancer to the streets when they team up February 7 and 8 for the fifth annual Dolphins Cycling Challenge, which benefits Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center. UM will pay registration fees for faculty, staff, and students who sign up by Thursday, July 31 as part of Team Sylvester. Rides range from 13 to 170 miles. | more |

$1 Million Gift Nets New State-of-the-Art Scoreboard for ’Canes Hoops
Keeping score at Miami Hurricanes home basketball games will be more exciting, and visually appealing, when the 2014-15 season rolls around. A new four-sided scoreboard made possible by a $1 million gift from FMSbonds, Inc. will feature high-definition video, replays, and interactive fan promotions, elevating the game experience for spectators. | more |

Swimmers and Divers Garner Team and Individual Academic Awards
Excellence in the classroom has earned the women’s swimming and diving team two prestigious honors from the College Swimming Coaches Association of America. The squad won the Team Scholar All-American Award after posting a collective grade point average of 3.32 during the spring semester, while All-American diver Kara McCormack has received Scholar All-America recognition. | more |

Defying Gravity: UM’s Microgravity Team Takes Flight
Invited to NASA’s Reduced Gravity Student Flight Opportunities Program, UM’s Microgravity Team conducted experiments in simulated zero gravity last week. Flying at 32,000 feet in a modified Boeing 727 that simulates weightlessness with a series of parabolic maneuvers, the engineering students, with Assistant Professor Landon Grace, tested the effects of reduced gravity on nanoparticle dispersion. Their goal: to develop high-strength composite materials, which could have a wide array of uses in everything from aircraft to blenders. |

The Department of Human Resources has released a new Internal Mobility: Transfer and Promotion policy to encourage staff to openly pursue opportunities for internal transfers or promotions with the support of their supervisors. The policy supports career growth and development at the University through improved communication between managers and their direct reports by removing fear of intimidation and promoting a more transparent interviewing process.

Mindful Living
This month’s Mindful Living seminar will focus on mindful movement, the practice of using gentle stretching and movement exercises to reduce mental, physical, and emotional stress. It will be facilitated by Carol Kaminsky, a board-certified dance-movement therapist and faculty member in the UM dance program, who has taught mindful movement and meditation for stress reduction for more than 20 years. Take Action Against Sexual Harassment and Violence
Sexual harassment and violence have become issues of great concern in recent years, especially in the academic and professional environments. In response to new federal legislation, the University has launched an awareness program to ensure the safety of everyone on campus. The program includes a brief online training course available through ULearn (keyword VAWA) that is designed to help faculty and staff understand how to recognize, avoid, and report abusive behavior.
