Attorneys and certified legal interns from Miami Law’s Health Rights Clinic are suing the Social Security Administration on behalf of 12 indigent and disabled clients who have been waiting as long as 26 months for a hearing or a ruling from a Social Security judge in Miami, which has the longest wait times in the nation. | more

Pioneering Sylvester Cancer Researcher Eckhard Podack Leaves Legacy of Discovery

Kaaya, Sheldon Named to Prestigious Watch Lists
Two Hurricanes student-athletes have been named to prestigious watch lists in their respective sports. Sophomore quarterback Brad Kaaya, who captured ACC Rookie of the Year honors last year, is on the 2015 Midseason Watch List for the College Football Performance Awards National Performer of the Year Trophy, while UM basketball’s Sheldon McClellan has been named to the watch list for the 2016 Jerry West Shooting Guard of the Year Award.

Compliance Corner: As Amateurs, Student-Athletes Cannot Promote Products, Services, or Events
NCAA rules govern the ability of student-athletes to promote causes in both the private and nonprofit sectors, and violations of these rules could lead to their ineligibility. In general, commercial businesses cannot use a student-athlete's name, image, or likeness in a promotion, but nonprofits, charities, and UM may under certain circumstances. So be sure to know the rules and seek approval from UM Athletics before using any student-athlete’s name, image, or likenesses to promote any UM or other initiative. | more

Sylvester Flash Mob Takes the Fight Against Cancer to the Street
First one, then two, then six, and eventually dozens of dancers and breast cancer survivors wearing hot pink Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center T-shirts, and a few tutus, provided the pregame entertainment by joining an inspiring #CanesAgainstCancer flash mob before the Miami Hurricanes vanquished Virginia Tech 30-20 at Sun Life Stadium on Saturday. Fate Bridge Over Lake Osceola to Open October 28
The new pedestrian bridge spanning Lake Osceola will be christened the Fate Bridge on Wednesday October 28 in honor of UM senior Hannah Weese’s grandfather, Alexander Grass, who lived his life by the last lines of the poem ‘Invictus’: “I am the master of my fate, I am the captain of my soul.” The Weese family, which through the Grass Family Foundation donated $1 million toward the bridge’s construction, hopes those lines will inspire all UM students. | more

Brothers Grim Gain International Acclaim for Their Horror Films
As motion pictures students in the School of Communication, Andres and Diego Meza-Valdes’s gusto for screening horror films at the Cosford Cinema compelled some fellow students with queasy stomachs to make quick exits. Now, horror film aficionados are streaming to The Meza Brother’s work, most recently their first action thriller, Boniato, which won the Diabolique International Film Festival’s Best Short award last month and, this past weekend, debuted at the Toronto After Dark Film Festival, considered one of the best horror film festivals in the world. | more
