Professor Helps Place Cuban Churches on World Monuments Watch List
When the World Monuments Fund placed the Colonial Churches of Santiago de Cuba on its World Monuments Watch List last Thursday, the conservation organization recognized the dozen historic churches as cultural treasures worth preserving, an important designation gained in large measure by UM’s Jorge L. Hernández, professor of architecture.

Scientists Track Speed of Powerful Internal Waves
Using a new technique developed at the University of Miami, researchers have, for the first time, directly measured the speed of an internal wave 80 meters below the ocean’s surface—a major breakthrough in the study of skyscraper-high waves that rarely break the ocean surface.

Health Rights Clinic Sues Social Security Over Long Delays
Attorneys and certified legal interns from Miami Law’s Health Rights Clinic are suing the Social Security Administration on behalf of 12 indigent and disabled clients who have been waiting as long as 26 months for a hearing or a ruling from a Social Security judge in Miami, which has the longest wait times in the nation.

30th Sports Legends Dinner Raises $12M to Cure Paralysis
Celebrities, sports legends, corporate leaders, and others joined NFL Hall of Famer Nick Buoniconti, his son Marc, and Event Chair Mark Dalton as they hosted a sold-out crowd at the 30th Annual Great Sports Legends Dinner, which raised more than $12 million, including $5 million from philanthropists Paul and Swanee DiMare.

Marketing Professor Wins Early Career Award
Juliano Laran, a professor of marketing who has published nearly 20 papers in leading journals, has won the Association for Consumer Research’s 2015 Early Career Award, which recognizes contributions to consumer research by someone who received his/her Ph.D. within the last eight years.

UM Launches Online Master’s Degrees in Nursing Informatics and Communication
The School of Nursing and Health Studies and the School of Communication are now registering students for their first, fully online master’s degree programs, with SONHS offering two master’s degrees in health informatics and SoC offering a Master of Arts in Communication Studies. All three UOnline programs launch in January.

UM President Julio Frenk has scheduled a series of meetings with staff as part of his continuing listening exercise, two of which will take place for staff on the Miller School of Medicine campus on Tuesday, October 27, and another on Monday, November 9 on the Coral Gables campus for staff from the Coral Gables and Rosenstiel School campuses. Pioneering Sylvester Cancer Researcher Eckhard Podack Leaves Legacy of Discovery
During his distinguished career at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, Eckhard Podack, professor and chair of the Miller School’s Department of Microbiology and Immunology, who passed away on Thursday, October 8, made a series of scientific discoveries that pointed toward more effective treatments for lung cancer, infectious diseases, and disorders of the immune system.

Employee Day Football Tickets Still Available for UM-Georgia Tech Game
Employees who haven’t ordered tickets yet are eligible for up to four tickets to the 2015 Employee Day Football Game on Saturday, November 21 when the Miami Hurricanes face the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets at Sun Life Stadium. Kaaya, Sheldon Named to Prestigious Watch Lists
Two Hurricanes student-athletes have been named to prestigious watch lists in their respective sports. Sophomore quarterback Brad Kaaya, who captured ACC Rookie of the Year honors last year, is on the 2015 Midseason Watch List for the College Football Performance Awards National Performer of the Year Trophy, while UM basketball’s Sheldon McClellan has been named to the watch list for the 2016 Jerry West Shooting Guard of the Year Award.

Compliance Corner: As Amateurs, Student-Athletes Cannot Promote Products, Services, or Events
NCAA rules govern the ability of student-athletes to promote causes in both the private and nonprofit sectors, and violations of these rules could lead to their ineligibility. In general, commercial businesses cannot use a student-athlete's name, image, or likeness in a promotion, but nonprofits, charities, and UM may under certain circumstances. So be sure to know the rules and seek approval from UM Athletics before using any student-athlete’s name, image, or likenesses to promote any UM or other initiative.

Sylvester Flash Mob Takes the Fight Against Cancer to the Street
First one, then two, then six, and eventually dozens of dancers and breast cancer survivors wearing hot pink Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center T-shirts, and a few tutus, provided the pregame entertainment by joining an inspiring #CanesAgainstCancer flash mob before the Miami Hurricanes vanquished Virginia Tech 30-20 at Sun Life Stadium on Saturday. Fate Bridge Over Lake Osceola to Open October 28
The new pedestrian bridge spanning Lake Osceola will be christened the Fate Bridge on Wednesday October 28 in honor of UM senior Hannah Weese’s grandfather, Alexander Grass, who lived his life by the last lines of the poem ‘Invictus’: “I am the master of my fate, I am the captain of my soul.” The Weese family, which through the Grass Family Foundation donated $1 million toward the bridge’s construction, hopes those lines will inspire all UM students.

Brothers Grim Gain International Acclaim for Their Horror Films
As motion pictures students in the School of Communication, Andres and Diego Meza-Valdes’s gusto for screening horror films at the Cosford Cinema compelled some fellow students with queasy stomachs to make quick exits. Now, horror film aficionados are streaming to The Meza Brother’s work, most recently their first action thriller, Boniato, which won the Diabolique International Film Festival’s Best Short award last month and, this past weekend, debuted at the Toronto After Dark Film Festival, considered one of the best horror film festivals in the world.

Despite a modest surge in its economy following the destructive 2010 earthquake, Haiti remains mired in economic crisis, as political instability, natural disasters, and other factors continue to make the island nation the poorest in the Americas, according to a new World Bank report, Haiti: Towards a New Narrative, shared with the University of Miami community last week.

Contemplating Character Through Portrait Drawing and Oil Sketches
More than 125 rare portrait drawings and oil sketches will be unveiled on Friday, October 23, when Contemplating Character: Portrait Drawings and Oil Sketches from Jacque-Louis David to Lucian Freud, opens at the Lowe Art Museum. Organized by Robert Flynn Johnson, curator emeritus of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, the exhibition will run through January 17, and feature a number of special programs, including talks by Johnson.
