Tickets for the Town Hall Meeting with President Julio Frenk at 6 p.m. on Thursday, September 10 are available for faculty, staff, alumni, and friends on a first-come, first-served basis through the BankUnited Center’s online system. Visit https://miami.edu/frenktownhall to set up an account and get your ticket, which will be emailed to you as a PDF. Tickets are limited to one per person.

Researchers Shed Light on Nature, the Tinkerer
In a study of the genomes of 48 species, UM biologists have revealed the timing and mechanisms underlying the expansion and diversification of the gene family known to regulate the maintenance of stem cells—painting a picture of nature innovating largely by tinkering with available genetic material.

Toppel Center Ranks Among the Best on Social Media
The Patricia and Harold Toppel Career Center has been recognized among the Top 25 Career Centers on Social Media in JobBrander’s annual review of the effectiveness and influence of the nation’s university career centers on social media. It earned the seventh spot, in part, for building its own original content, including videos about student experiences.

Flutist Honored with Phillip Frost Teaching Award
Trudy Kane, associate professor of flute in the Department of Instrumental Performance, who joined the faculty after 32 seasons as principal flutist of the Metropolitan Opera, was awarded the Phillip Frost Award for Excellence in Teaching and Scholarship this month.

Student Industrial Engineers Takes IIE Gold—Again
For the fifth consecutive year, UM’s Institute of Industrial Engineers Student Chapter, which, among many accomplishments, has created videos and hosted a Girl Scout Engineering Day to introduce high school students and young girls to engineering, has received the IIE’s Gold Award for overall achievement in 2014-15.

Coaches and student-athletes will be on hand at the annual CanesFest celebration on Saturday, August 29, when fans can tour UM athletic facilities, acquire autographs from their favorite student-athletes, participate in the inflatable field goal kick challenge, run through the helmet the football team runs through on game day, and much more.

The fall semester begins today, following a whirlwind week when Julio Frenk took the reins as UM’s sixth president and 1,800 freshmen joined the family of ’Canes. Frenk and the Class of 2019 enjoyed many firsts over the week—including their first ’Canes Kickoff at the BankUnited Center, where the former Harvard dean delivered his first welcome address, and the newcomers were introduced to UM’s cheerleaders, Band of the Hour, Sunsations dancers, and much more.
