Brazil is the fifth largest country in the world and one of the most culturally diverse countries in Latin America. Bordering on all but two countries in South America, Brazil's territory extends over nearly half of the continent. Rio de Janeiro is famous for its natural settings, carnival celebrations, samba, and hotel-lined tourist beaches, such as Copacabana and Ipanema. Porto Alegre is characterized its sprawling green areas, the dazzling sunset over the Guíaba estuary and the hospitality of the Gauchos, as the locals are called.

The Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro, or PUC Rio, was established as the first private university in Brazil in 1941. Boasting an academic tradition of idealism, consistence and excellence, the institution has it been commited to high-quality teaching, applied research and scientific development since its founding. Today, PUC Rio, has a total enrollement of nearly 10,000 undergraduate studentes. The university campus is located in Gavea, a charming neighborhood near the forest and beach. Besides the mandatory Portuguese as a Second Language Course, students will enroll directly with Brazilian students and must have and excellent command of the language.

Prerequisites
Minimum GPA 3.0. Fluency or advanced skills in Portuguese language. UM students should have taken through at least the first 300-level Portuguese language course prior to participation (except those taking PUC-Rio courses in English).
Room and Board
Students are encouraged to live with a homestay arranged by PUC-Rio.

Seasons are opposite to that of the Northern Hemisphere.

The Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio Grande do Sul (PUCRS) is one the largest and most distinguished institutions of higher education in Brazil. The main campus of PUCRS is located in Porto Alegre, the capital city of Brazil’s southernmost state of Rio Grande do Sul. This situates the unversity in the strategic geographical center for development of Mercosur, the common market made up by Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay and Brazil.

Salvador da Bahia in the northeast is the capital of a region that celebrates the country's connections to its African heritage and is also a grand city with opportunities to enjoy the music and dance, which make Brazil's culture so very rich.
The June-July program takes place on the campus of the Universidade Federal da Bahia (UFBA), which is located near the commercial downtown area of Salvador and the famous colonial zone of Pelourinho.
