Dreaming of Democracy
Friday, October 21
2 p.m. - E352 School of Law
The University of Miami School of Law has convened a panel of nationally renowned scholars to discuss the topic of race and democracy. The panel will use the text of Professor Marvin Jones' recent work, Race, Sex, and Suspicion: The Myth of the Black Male, as a backdrop for analysis, dialogue and debate. The book focuses on the tension between the formal equality black men possess and their social and economic isolation. The panel will explore themes related to this including the social construction of identity, the intersection of race and gender in the criminal justice system, and the emergence of "reasonable racism" (particularly in the context of social profiling). Panelists include Linda Greene, John Calmore, Bryan Fair, and Kenneth Nunn. For more information, contact the School of Law at 305-284-4767.
