Shakespeare and Opera

Clarke Recital Hall, Frost School of Music

The Frost Opera Theater concludes its 2006-07 season with opera scenes drawn from Shakespeare settings from the 19th and 20th centuries:  Nicolai’s The Merry Wives of Windsor, Otello by both Rossini and Verdi, Hamlet by Thomas, Sir John in Love by Vaughan Williams, and Verdi’s brilliant final masterpiece Falstaff. Stage direction by David Malis and Music Supervision by Alan Johnson. Performances are April 12*,13,14, at 8 PM, and April 15 at 3 PM. Tickets: $10 for general admission, $5 for seniors, faculty, staff, and students. *The April 12 performance is free for UM faculty, staff and students with ID. University of Miami alumnus Dr. David Champouillon, B.M. '87, Bach Performing Artist and Associate Professor at East Tennessee State University, will be performing at the Arturo Sandoval Jazz Club in Miami Beach on April 27, 2007, at 9 and 11 p.m. Champouillon will be returning to Miami after a 20-year absence, performing with the Lenore Raphael Trio. Young Heroes: Voices of RugMark Children

Join University of Miami President Donna E. Shalala in welcoming two rescued children weavers from Nepal as part of the Young Heroes tour. Jaya Bhandari and Sanita Lama were found working in carpet factories in Kathmandu and rescued by RugMark inspectors at the ages of 11 and 10, respectively. Now both 19 years-old, they are studying in the 12th grade with RugMark’s ongoing support. RugMark USA is the international nonprofit organization devoted to building the schools, programs and opportunities that give South Asia’s 300,000 ‘carpet kids’ back their childhoods. Mentally Ill Defendants in Jail

This free symposium, held at 1 p.m.  at the University of Miami School of Law, will discuss the ethical and legal issues surrounding the housing of mentally ill defendants in the Miami-Dade County Jail.  The distinguished panel will include Judge Steve Leifman, Creator of the Eleventh Circuit Criminal Mental Health Project; Dr. Charles LoPiccolo, Forensic Psychiatrist with the Bayview Center for Mental Health; and Valerie Jonas, Esq., of the Public Defender's Office for the Eleventh Judicial Circuit of Florida.  It is presented by the Journal of Psychology, Public Policy & Law and the University of Miami Ethics Programs.  Lunch is included and CLE credits are pending with the Florida Bar.  For additional information, please contact PPPLJournal@gmail.com
