Barry Sparkman

Opening Reception: Saturday, July 12

The Wynwood Project Space

Resiliant by Barry SparkmanThe Wynwood Project Space invites you to attend a solo exhibition by Miami-based artist Barry Sparkman. The exhibition will run from July 12 through August 2. Sparkman will present works from his recent Hypnea series.

Sparkman, who has been making non-narrative, abstract paintings and collages since 1983, has found himself increasingly drawn to the possibilities of printmaking. Over the past five years, Sparkman has been experimenting with a range of techniques, including block printing, silk screen, lithography, etching and monotype, all of which he masterfully integrates into his current body of work, Hypnea, whose name comes from a genus of seaweed commonly harvested for use as an additive in drugs and cosmetics. Mediated photographs of the hypnea plant serve as his source imagery, which he transforms at times into flat, Lichtenstein-inspired brushstrokes or sets down in layers to build vast cosmic landscapes. All the while, Sparkman remains strongly connected to a tradition of process-oriented abstraction that he traces from Wassily Kandinsky and Paul Klee through more recent practitioners such as Terry Winters and Julie Mehretu. For Sparkman, each new work is ultimately “an attempt to provide viewers an escape from the literal”.
