Cheer on Fellow Hurricanes as they Go for the Gold in Beijing

Lauryn WilliamsWhether it is in Beijing, your living room, the pub or in thoughts, cheer on your fellow Hurricanes as they compete in the 2008 Olympic Games. The University of Miami has a sextuplet of current and former students going for the gold in Beijing at the Olympic Games, which began last Friday.

The six athletes, two of whom are silver medalists from previous Olympic games, include two former UM track-and-field stars, two divers, a swimmer and a sailor.

Lauryn Williams, B.B.A. '05, who won a silver medal in the 100-meters at the 2004 Athens Games, will compete in the event again as a member of the track and field team. Williams will also compete for the U.S. in the 4x100-meter relay and is an alternate in the 200-meters. She was a nine-time All-American and NCAA champion at UM. Lauryn was also the winner of the UMAA 2008 William R. Butler Community Service Award.

Ginou Etienne, B.S. Ed. ’07, will represent the Haitian National Team in Beijing, competing in the 400-meters, an event in which she was a two-time All-American at UM.

UM sophomore diver Rueben Ross will represent Canada in both the 10-meter platform and 3-meter springboard. He is the Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Diver of the Year, having captured the 2008 NCAA Championship in the men’s 3-meter springboard.

Hurricanes senior diver Jenna Dreyer, who competed in the 2004 Athens Games as a high school senior, will represent South Africa in Beijing, competing in the 3-meter springboard. She will be coached by UM head diving coach Randy Ableman, who will be making his fourth appearance as an Olympic diving coach, having served on the 1996, 2000, and 2004 U.S. coaching staffs.

Former UM swimmer Manon van Rooijen, B.S. ’06, returns to the Olympics this year after winning a silver medal at the 2000 Sydney Games—the first Olympic medal for a Miami swimmer in program history. In Beijing, she will compete for the Netherlands in both the 4x100-meter and 4x200-meter freestyle relay events.

St. Petersburg, Florida native Zach Railey, B.S. Ed. ’06, who started sailing when he was 8 years old, is bound for the Beijing Games as a member of the 2008 Olympic Sailing team, competing in the Finn class.

Upcoming Events at the University of Miami

June 28 - November 2 The Lowes Art Museum presents Excavating Egypt: Great Discoveries from the Petrie Museum of Egyptian Archaeology, is an exhibition featuring antiquities from the Petrie Museum of Egyptology, University College, London. Photographs, excavation notes, and personal journals shed further light on the science of archaeology during its infancy, as seen through the eyes of one of its greatest pioneers, Sir Flinders Petrie, known as the "father of Egyptian Archaeology". The Lowe Art Museum is located at the University of Miami at 1301 Stanford Drive, Coral Gables. For more information, call (305) 284-3535 or visit www.lowemuseum.org.

August 15 - August 17 The Children of Huang Shi, is based on real events, this film is a sweeping but intimate story set against war-torn China in the 1930’s. The film centers on a young English journalist (Jonathan Rhys Meyers), an American nurse (Radha Mitchell) and the leader of a Chinese partisan group (Chow Yun Fat) who meet in desperate and unexpected circumstances. Together they rescue 60 orphaned children, leading them on an extraordinary journey across hundreds of miles of treacherous terrain, through snow-covered mountains and an unforgiving desert. Along the way they discover the true meaning of love, responsibility and courage.

Kings, is a universal story of disenfranchisement and search for identity. In the mid 1970s, a group of six young men left their homes in the West of Ireland, took the boat out of Dublin Bay and sailed across the sea to England in the hope of making their fortunes and returning home. Thirty years later only one, Jackie Flavin, makes it home - but does so in a coffin. Jackie’s five friends reunite at his wake where they are forced to face up to the reality of their alienation as long term emigrants who no longer have any real place to call home. This was Ireland’s official entry to the 2007 Academy Awards.
