Holtz Children’s Hospital 58th Annual Beaux Arts Festival of Art
January 10 and 11
Coral Gables Campus
On the weekend of January 10 and January 11, 2009, the University of Miami will host the Holtz Children’s Hospital 58th Annual Beaux Arts Festival of Art on the main campus grounds surrounding the Lowe Art Museum. Recognized as one of the top-rated outdoor exhibits of museum quality fine art, the weekend event offers visitors the opportunity to meet and talk with exhibiting artists, sample fine cuisine, enjoy live entertainment, and for the kids, a chance to make fun arts and crafts projects at the “Art Park” located inside the Children’s Pavilion on the back side of the Lowe.
The Beaux Arts Festival of Art is also special in that it features a “Student
Artist Showcase” which judges and displays artwork submitted by middle school
and high school students. Also, proceeds from the Festival of Art support the “Hands
On” program, a Beaux Arts/Lowe program which provides field trips for underprivileged
children throughout the Miami-Dade public school system to visit the Lowe
museum.
Anyone interested in underwriting opportunities to support the Beaux Arts Festival of Art may contact beauxartsinfo@beauxartsmiami.org. The Beaux Arts Festival of Art is produced by Beaux Arts, Inc., a nonprofit organization that supports the Lowe Art Museum of the University of Miami and receives no commission for the sale of artwork.
TRACKING THE WORLD’S LARGEST SHARK
WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 14
Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science
The
University of Miami’s Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science,
and the Ocean Research and Education Foundation, have announced the roster
of distinguished scientists and explorers who will speak in the 2009 Sea Secrets
lecture series. The events, which are free and open to the public, are designed
to provide insight and information about the oceans that cover two-thirds of
our planet, and much of which, are still an enigma. Programs take place in
the Rosenstiel School Auditorium, 4600 Rickenbacker Causeway, on Virginia Key,
beginning with a reception at 5:30 p.m., followed by the lecture at 6:00 p.m.
Sponsored by The Lawrence J. and Florence A. De George Charitable Trust and
the Charles N. and Eleanor Knight Leigh Foundation, Sea Secrets is designed
for the South Florida non-scientific community. Tracking
the World's Largest Shark is the first event scheduled for Sea Secrets
in 2009.
Dr. Robert Hueter, Director, for the Center for Shark Research Mote Marine
Laboratory will be presenting Tracking the World's Largest
Shark. The whale
shark is the world’s
largest species of shark - actually the largest species of fish that has ever
existed - and yet information is just coming to light on their numbers, behavior
and ecology. Follow a collaborative U.S.-Mexico team of scientists and students
as their research reveals the largest known aggregation of whale sharks off
the coast of Mexico, and how they track these gentle behemoths on migrations
that take them thousands of miles away, and plunging over a mile into the coldest
depths of the sea. Learn about the threats that whale sharks face in the ocean
today, some of which may surprise you.
For more information regarding this event, or the 2009 Sea Secrets lecture
series, please contact Laura Bracken, Outreach Coordinator, at 305-421-4307
or via e-mail at lbracken@rsmas.miami.edu.

BIEDERMAN: A RETROSPECTIVE , an exhibition featuring paintings
and mixed media constructions in a comprehensive look at the art
of Charles Biederman, an important member of America’s constructivist
movement, whose innovations trace the progress of geometric abstraction
through nearly half a century. Organized by the Frederick R. Weisman

Stadium, November 23, 1968: for the first time since
1909, the football teams of Harvard and Yale are undefeated as
they meet for their final game. Yale is heavily favored, with
Brian Dowling, its captain and quarterback. Harvard’s lineman
is Tommy Lee Jones — Al
Gore’s roommate. Producer, directer and editer Kevin Rafferty
intercuts original footage with the hilarious, suspenseful recollections
of the 50 men who played in what has become one of college football’s
most famous games. For more information visit, www.cosfordcinema.com.
January 9 - 18: STRANDED: I'VE COME FROM A PLANE THAT
CRASHED IN THE MOUNTAINS: In 1972, a Uruguayan rugby team
took off on Flight 571 for a weekend in Chile. They never made
it; instead, the plane crashed in the Andes. 12 passengers and
crew members among the 45 people on board died on impact or
soon thereafter. Another 5 died before daybreak the second day.
The remaining passengers -- young, scared, injured -- did what
they could and later what they had to, in order to survive.
Stranded not only interviews the survivors of Flight
571 but also follows the survivors and their loved ones on a
journey back to the crash site over 30 years later, and includes
recreations of the flight and the struggles of the stranded
youths. Directed by Gonzalo Arijon. For more information visit, www.cosfordcinema.com.

Theodore Bikel in Sholom Aleichem: Laughter Through Tears
- A Life of Stories with Music & Song
Jan. 28 thru Feb. 1
Parker Playhouse

Sholom Aleichem, Yiddish literature's
most beloved author, a writer who singularly spoke for an entire people,
becomes both subject and muse when the acclaimed stage and screen actor
Theodore Bikel taps into another creative genre to write this touching
play, in which he also stars and sings. Playing Sholom Aleichem and many
of his colorful characters, Bikel magically melds lives and times long
gone with matters that tug at our heartstrings today. Complemented by
an enchanting trove of music from Eastern Europe, sung in both English
and Yiddish and performed onstage by internationally renowned musicians,
Bikel offers exceptional insight into the life of this fascinating storyteller
who wanted to be remembered only with laughter. Often called the Jewish
Mark Twain, Sholom Aleichem, also a humorist, wrote the Tevye the Milkman
stories that inspired "Fiddler
on the Roof".
The Sue & Leonard Miller Center for Judaic Studies is pleased to offer you a 10% discount on tickets to this wonderful show. Please be sure when purchasing tickets to use the password LAUGHTER to receive this discount.

JCVD
January 2 to 4
Coral Gables Campus

When the life of Jean-Claude Van Damme (JCVD)
collides with the reality of a hold-up in Brussels, Belgium, suddenly the
huge movie star turns into an ordinary guy, filled with fears, contradictions
and hopes. How can he be up to the legend he has built? What can a film
hero do when the gun pointed to his temple isn’t
filled with blanks? JCVD finds himself at the turning point of his “hero” life.
This film was imagined as a spiral adventure which starts off badly and
ends even worse. When external conquests, movies, cash and fame aren’t worth
anything compared to self-reconquest. Admission is $6 for all University
of Miami alumni, faculty, and staff, and is free for students. General admission
is $8. The film screens on Friday, January 2 at 7:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m.,
Saturday, January 3 at 3:00 p.m., 5:00 p.m., 7:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. and
Sunday, January 4 at 3:00 p.m., 5:00 p.m., 7:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. For more
information on this Cosford Cinema exclusive screening visit,
