Global Business Forum features top executives at UM this week
January 15 - 16
In
the wake of the historic economic crisis, and just days before the
new presidential administration takes its place in Washington, leading
CEOs and other thought leaders will gather at the University of Miami
to address the financial crisis, energy demand, health
care, the environment, and other issues related to global connectivity.
The University of Miami Global Business Forum, presented by the John
S. and James L. Knight Foundation and organized by the University’s
School of Business Administration, will be held Thursday, January
15 and Friday, January 16 at various locations on the Coral Gables
campus.
The keynote speakers will be Michael L. Ducker, president, International,
FedEx Express; Alberto Ibargüen, president and chief executive officer
of the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation; Muhtar Kent, president and
CEO of The Coca-Cola Company; Frances Aldrich Sevilla-Sacasa, former president
of U.S. Trust, Bank of America Private Wealth Management; Arun Sarin, former
CEO, Vodafone Group; UM President Donna E. Shalala; Jim Skinner, vice chairman
and CEO of McDonald’s Corporation; and Jack Welch, former CEO of General Electric
Company.
"As the world continues to shrink, the opportunities to become a player in the global arena increase," said Shalala. "Our University is uniquely positioned to bring together the best minds around to share ideas on global connectivity and what it means to our businesses, health care and research, the arts, education, communication, and our future lives."
Over the course of two days, the forum will present more than a dozen panel sessions focusing on issues ranging from the global financial crisis and alternative energy to health care, the environment, sustainable urbanism, women in leadership, and the developing economies of Latin America and Asia. The sessions will also feature top executives from leading organizations and other thought leaders on global connectivity.
For the complete Global Business Forum schedule, speaker line-up and to register at the UM member rate, visit www.bus.miami.edu/gbf. Be sure to check the UM member box to receive a discount.

Dr. Henry King Stanford’s Memorial Service
Friday, February 27
Coral Gables Campus
President
Emeritus Dr. Henry King Stanford who led the University of Miami from 1962
to 1981, passed away New Year’s Day in Americus, Georgia at the age of
92.
“Dr. Stanford was deeply beloved by the University community,” says current UM President Donna E. Shalala. “Many alumni and longtime faculty and staff members have told me about how he would walk around the campus and greet everyone, even during times of student unrest. His enthusiasm for the University was infectious.”
Dr. Stanford's administration was marked by emphasis on research, extensive growth in physical facilities during a time when funds were difficult to come by, and reorganization of the administrative structure. During his administration, the size of the faculty tripled, federal research funding increased by almost 700 percent, and the number of faculty with doctoral degrees rose from 50 percent to 75 percent.
A building on the Coral Gables campus, Stanford Residential College, and a major roadway, Stanford Drive, pay homage to the former president’s legacy.
Many former students, colleagues and co-workers have recalled Stanford's humanistic
side and leadership style online. If you would like to read or share your
memories of Dr. Stanford, click here.
The University of Miami will hold a Memorial Service for President Emeritus
Dr. Henry King Stanford on Friday, February 27, 2009, at 3 p.m. at the Storer
Auditorium at the School of Business Administration.
TRACKING THE WORLD’S LARGEST SHARK
WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 14
Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science
The
University of Miami’s Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science,
and the Ocean Research and Education Foundation, have announced the roster
of distinguished scientists and explorers who will speak in the 2009 Sea Secrets
lecture series. The events, which are free and open to the public, are designed
to provide insight and information about the oceans that cover two-thirds of
our planet, and much of which, are still an enigma. Programs take place in
the Rosenstiel School Auditorium, 4600 Rickenbacker Causeway, on Virginia Key,
beginning with a reception at 5:30 p.m., followed by the lecture at 6:00 p.m.
Sponsored by The Lawrence J. and Florence A. De George Charitable Trust and
the Charles N. and Eleanor Knight Leigh Foundation, Sea Secrets is designed
for the South Florida non-scientific community. Tracking
the World's Largest Shark is the first event scheduled for Sea Secrets
in 2009.
Dr. Robert Hueter, Director, for the Center for Shark Research Mote Marine
Laboratory, will be presenting Tracking the World's Largest
Shark. The whale
shark is the world’s
largest species of shark - actually the largest species of fish that has ever
existed - and yet information is just coming to light on their numbers, behavior
and ecology. Follow a collaborative U.S.-Mexico team of scientists and students
as their research reveals the largest known aggregation of whale sharks off
the coast of Mexico, and how they track these gentle behemoths on migrations
that take them thousands of miles away, and plunging over a mile into the coldest
depths of the sea. Learn about the threats that whale sharks face in the ocean
today, some of which may surprise you.
For more information regarding this event, or the 2009 Sea Secrets lecture
series, please contact Laura Bracken, Outreach Coordinator, at 305-421-4307
or via e-mail at lbracken@rsmas.miami.edu.

Sholom Aleichem, Yiddish literature's
