College of Engineering Distinguished Speaker Series, featuring Dr. Sheldon Weinbaum
Monday, March 2
Micro-CT Analysis of a New Paradigm for Vulnerable Plaque Rupture: Cellular
Microcalcifications in Fibrous Caps.
Nearly 60% of all deaths due to cardiovascular disease in the U.S. are
due to the sudden rupture of thin cap fibroatheroma (TCFA). TCFA is the
fibrous cap overlying the necrotic core of a vulnerable plaque within coronary
arteries. This presentation will focus on a new hypothesis for TCFA rupture,
namely due to stress-induced debonding of minute calcifications, the size of
a single cell whose dimensions are much smaller than large calcifications which
are much more stable. This session will take place from 11 a.m. - 12 p.m, at
the Schwartz Nursing Building, Room 107. Light refreshments will be provided.
For additional information or to RSVP contact Anne Schaerli at
305-284-2908 or aschaerli@miami.edu.
“From Red Cells to Skiing to a Jet Train that Flies
on a Soft Porous Track at 700 km/hr”
This lecture will examine the quantitative feasibility of developing an airborne jet train that flies on a soft porous track within centimeters of the earth’s surface at speeds approaching current commercial jet aircraft. The jet train employs a lift mechanism first described for red blood cells gliding on the layer o cells lining the close spaces of the human body and subsequently used to predict lift forces generated in skiing and snowboarding by transiently trapped air beneath their planning surfaces. Engineering fluid dynamics principles are used to who that with a thrust of 10,000 lbf, about 1/5 that of a 200 passenger jet aircraft, one is able to obtain a cruising velocity approaching 700 km/hr. This would allow for huge fuel savings and greatly reduce greenhouse emissions. For additional information Dr. S. S. Rao, Tel. 305-284-3308.
Dr. Sheldon Weinbaum, a CUNY Distinguished Research Professor, is widely recognized for his contributions to re-entry aerodynamics and basic studies in fluid mechanics and for work focusing on transport and cellular level biomechanical phenomena in the human body. He is the only engineer to have received a Guggenheim in the area of cell and molecular biology and is one of eight living individuals elected to all three U.S. National Academies, the National Academy of Engineering, National Academy of Science, and the Institute of Medicine.
