back home. In addition to events that appeal to everyone, Alumni Weekend
provides an opportunity to get together with friends who were at UM at
the same time and shared similar experiences. The weekend will be filled
with events reminiscent of your time as a student at UM such as: the 50th
and Old Timers (SUPERCANES) Reunion, life-long learning
classes at the Audrey R. Finkelstein UM Experience,
the homecoming parade, a reunion block party on Alumni Avenue,
the time-honored boat burning and fireworks, and the festive tailgate
party at the Pregame Celebration before the
Hurricanes take on the Virginia Cavaliers.
We’re counting on you to help make this year’s celebration the most exciting
ever! So get the group back together to catch up, walk down memory lane,
and remember why it’s great to be a Miami Hurricane! Contact the UMAA at 1-866-UM-ALUMS

Upcoming Events at the University of Miami
July 17 - 19 AFGHAN STAR – After thirty years
of war and five devastating years of Taliban rule, pop culture
is beginning to return to the country. Since 2005, millions have
been tuning in to Tolo TV’s wildly popular American Idol-style
series Afghan Star. Like its Western predecessors, people compete
for a cash prize and record deal. More surprisingly, the contest
is open to everyone across the country despite gender, ethnicity
or age. Two thousand people audition, including three extremely
brave women. And when viewers vote for their favorites via cell
phone, it is, for many, their first encounter with the democratic
process. Winner of the Directing and Audience Awards in Sundance’s
2009 World Documentary competition, Havana Marking’s timely
and moving film follows the dramatic stories of four young finalists—two
men and two women—as they hazard everything to become the
nation’s favorite performer. By observing the Afghani people’s
relationship to its pop culture, Afghan Star is the perfect window
into a country’s tenuous, ongoing struggle for modernity.
What Americans consider frivolous entertainment is downright revolutionary—and
more human—in this troubled part of the world. Admission
is $6 for all University of Miami alumni, faculty, and staff, and
is free for students. General admission is $8. For more information
visit www.cosfordcinema.com.
July 18 - 19 SPIDER FOREST – In this atmospheric, supernatural thriller a TV producer loses his way in the middle of a dark forest. Upon entering a cabin, he stumbles upon two murders and realizes that one of the victims is his girlfriend. He begins to question his sanity as he tries to solve the puzzle of the disturbing crimes and get to the truth behind the convoluted myth of these woods. Korean with English subtitles. General admission is $8. The film screens on Saturday, July 18 at 3:00 p.m. and Sunday, July 19 at 6:00 p.m. For more information visit www.cosfordcinema.com.
July 18 - 19 MEMENTO MORI – Two teenage girls explore their attraction to one another as they resist the confining social pressures of their all-female boarding school. Told in flashbacks, this film explores memory, perception, and self-disclosure, as one of the girls comes to terms with the other’s untimely death. Korean with English subtitles. General admission is $8. The film screens on Saturday, July 18 at 5:00 p.m. and Sunday, July 18 at 4:00 p.m. For more information visit www.cosfordcinema.com.

Lowe Art Museum Hosts Docent Open House
July 30
Coral Gables Campus
The Lowe Art Museum depends on its docent
volunteers to be the museum's "face" to its visitors. Docents create
memorable experiences for visitors ranging in age from kindergarten
students to seniors. More than 60 docents collectively conduct about
1200 tours each year.
Docents for the Lowe typically have a background in education, art, or similar fields. They share a strong sense of camaraderie, and enjoy the personal enrichment that comes through the academic training they receive and the pleasure in discovering art together with others.
To become a docent at the Lowe, volunteer candidates must commit to
an intensive one-year training program. Classes meet bi-weekly throughout
the academic year, and participants are trained on teaching and touring
techniques, grade specific tours, the museum's collections, new acquisitions,
changing exhibitions and art education. Candidates are required to
complete a variety of written and oral assignments and pass a qualifying
tour in order to become an active docent. After graduating from the
one-year training program, the Lowe asks for a two-year service commitment.
Exhibition training continues weekly for the duration of service as
a docent.
Come find out if the Docent Volunteer program is the right opportunity
for you at the Lowe’s upcoming Open House event. Staff and docents
will be on-site to introduce the program more thoroughly, and program
applications will be available. For more information or to RSVP, please
contact Jodi Sypher at jsypher@miami.edu or
visit www.lowemuseum.org.
