Picture Yourself at Alumni Weekend and Homecoming
November 5 – 7
Alumni
Weekend and Homecoming is a time when the University invites all alumni
back home. In addition to events that appeal to everyone, Alumni Weekend
provides an opportunity to get together with friends who were at UM at
the same time and shared similar experiences. The weekend will be filled
with events reminiscent of your time as a student at UM such as: the 50th
and Old Timers (SUPERCANES) Reunion, life-long learning
classes at the Audrey R. Finkelstein UM Experience,
the homecoming parade, a reunion block party on Alumni Avenue,
the time-honored boat burning and fireworks, and the festive tailgate
party at the Pregame Celebration before the
Hurricanes take on the Virginia Cavaliers.
We’re counting on you to help make this year’s celebration the most exciting
ever! So get the group back together to catch up, walk down memory lane,
and remember why it’s great to be a Miami Hurricane! Contact the UMAA at 1-866-UMALUMS
(862-5867), 305-284-2872, or via e-mail at alumni@miami.edu.

SMOKEY JOE’S CAFE
September 9-19
UM Jerry Herman Ring Theatre
Songs of Leiber and Stoller
Tap your toes and snap your fingers to pop standards from rock ‘n’ roll to rhythm
and blues! Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller virtually invented rock 'n' roll, and
this 1995 Broadway hit celebrates their pivotal role in launching a golden age
of American culture. The classic themes of love won, lost and imagined dovetail
with humorous set pieces and slice-of-life cameos. Featuring such unforgettable
standards as “On Broadway”, “Love Potion #9”, “Spanish Harlem”, “Fools
Fall in Love”, and nearly 40 other classic rock ‘n’ roll hits, Smokey
Joe’s
Café isn’t just great pop music—it’s compelling musical theatre!
This is just the beginning of the UM Jerry Herman Ring Theatre 2009/2010 season.
For season shows, tickets or more information, please visit www.miami.edu/ring.
Remembering UM, Call Out for Volunteers
The
history of the University resonates when you start looking through photographs!
The University of Miami Alumni Association and University Libraries have
partnered to offer small-group, monthly viewing opportunities of photographs,
slides, and negatives dating back to the 1920s in an effort to identify
and archive.
For more information or to volunteer, please contact Kate Lake, assistant director of alumni programs, at klake@miami.edu or
305-284-2106.
Upcoming Events at the University of Miami
July 31 - August 2 O’HORTEN – Odd Horten (Baard
Owe) is a former train driver who struggles to adjust to the freedoms
of retirement. Most of the movie takes place in the snow-covered
Oslo night, where Horten encounters a series of erratic characters
as his own behavior slides into nonconformity. The writer/director
(Bent Hamer) fills this movie with little eccentricities that are
rarely explained but often provoke amusement. O’Horten is
a wonderfully amusing piece, with Hamer demonstrating his innate
ability for offbeat comedy. Owe’s deadpan delivery is flawless,
and his restrained performance offers few clues as to what is going
on in Horten’s
head, requiring the audience to ponder the motivations for his
increasingly peculiar behavior. Admission is $6 for all University
of Miami alumni, faculty, and staff, and is free for students.
General admission is $8. The film screens on Friday, July 31 at
7:00 p.m., Saturday, August 1 at 4:15 and 8:05 p.m., and Sunday,
August 2 at 4:15 and 8:15 p.m. For more information, visit www.cosfordcinema.com.
July 31 - August 2 OUTRAGE – In his latest piece
of cine-journalism, Kirby Dick exposes what he deems to be the
rampant, hypocritical homophobia that exists in an American government
that is, in fact, teeming with closeted homosexuals. Dick brings
an impassioned and well-reasoned eye to his material, which should
have viewers on the more conservative side of the fence paying
closer attention than they would have had he taken a more blustery
approach. As it stands, Outrage is an illuminating, stirring
call to arms. Dick interviews the political community’s most prominent
gay figures—including former New Jersey governor Jim McGreevey
and Congressman Barney Frank—as well as many others, who
share their own thoughtful insights into just how deep the personal
and political corruption runs. But Outrage is by no means
a finger-wagging witch-hunt—Dick’s intention is not to ruin the
life of anyone. Like McGreevey, he believes that everyone would
be better off if they acknowledged who they are, in public and
in private. General admission is $8. The film screens on Friday,
July 31 at 9:00 p.m., Saturday, August 1 at 6:10 and 10:00
p.m. and Sunday, August 2 at 6:15 p.m. For more information, visit www.cosfordcinema.com.
August 1 - 2 I PURITANI – Following five years
of extraordinary success with La
Sonnambula, Norma and Beatrice di Tenda, I
Puritani, the last opera written by a young Bellini, who
died at age 34, is the richest example of transition from the
lyrical classicism to the passion of romanticism. The first performances,
in Paris, 1835, interpreted by the most beautiful voices at that
time became a legend. For this production of I
Puritani, the Teatro Comunale di Bologna has reunited two
young stars who could well become the dream couple in the opera
world : Juan Diego Flórez and Nino Machaidze. Conducted by the
extremely talented Michele Mariotti, I Puritani has
been directed by the internationally renowned Pier’Alli, who,
for more than 25 years, has set milestones in the story of opera
direction. General admission is $8. The film screens on Saturday,
August 1 and Sunday, August 2 at 1:00
p.m. For more information, visit www.cosfordcinema.com.

Winning Leaders and Managers Competencies
Monday, August 17
The
Leadership Institute will offer a one-day Winning Leaders and Managers
program titled "Business Acumen and Transformational Leadership," held at the James W. McLamore
Executive Education Center at the University of Miami School of Business.
The Leadership Institute has recently launched its Winning Leaders and Managers series. More than 250 managers in Miami-Dade County have participated in the program and offered extremely positive feedback.
According to the International City and County Managers Association, chief administrative officers, city and county managers and assistants require higher skill levels, more creative problem-solving and an ability to inspire the local government workforce to achieve ever-increasing productivity and performance levels. Leadership development at the mid-manager and executive levels remains a priority for leading cities and counties across this nation, even in these tough economic times.
For more information call 305-284-4154, e-mail leadershipinstitute@miami.edu or visit www.bus.miami.edu/leadership.
Lowe Art Museum Hosts Docent Open House
Thursday, July 30
Coral Gables Campus
The Lowe Art Museum depends on its docent
volunteers to be the museum's "face" to its visitors. Docents create
memorable experiences for visitors ranging in age from kindergarten
students to seniors. More than 60 docents collectively conduct about
1,200 tours each year.
Docents for the Lowe typically have a background in education, art, or similar fields. They share a strong sense of camaraderie, and enjoy the personal enrichment that comes through the academic training they receive and the pleasure in discovering art together with others.
To become a docent at the Lowe, volunteer candidates must commit to
an intensive one-year training program. Classes meet bi-weekly throughout
the academic year, and participants are trained on teaching and touring
techniques, grade specific tours, the museum's collections, new acquisitions,
changing exhibitions and art education. Candidates are required to
complete a variety of written and oral assignments and pass a qualifying
tour in order to become an active docent. After graduating from the
one-year training program, the Lowe asks for a two-year service commitment.
Exhibition training continues weekly for the duration of service as
a docent.
Come find out if the Docent Volunteer program is the right opportunity
for you at the Lowe’s upcoming Open House event. Staff and docents
will be on-site to introduce the program more thoroughly, and program
applications will be available. For more information or to RSVP, please
contact Jodi Sypher at jsypher@miami.edu or
visit www.lowemuseum.org.
