Calling for 'Canes Memorabilia

UM MemorabiliaThe Robert and Judi Prokop Newman Alumni Center, scheduled to open September 2010, will be a welcoming second home for our returning alumni. In order to imbue the Newman Alumni Center with a sense of place, we have incorporated into our design plan ten display cases to showcase University of Miami memorabilia, and a library to feature archived copies of the yearbook and alumni authored books. We need your help, however, to make this a reality. If you have UM memorabilia (pins, dinks, pennants, ribbons, and more) or alumni authored books in good condition that you would like to donate to the Newman Alumni Center, or if you would like more information about the types of items we need, please contact the Office of Alumni Relations at 1-866-UMALUMS (1-866-862-5867) or e-mail alumni@miami.edu.

Tom Muhl Exhibit of Holocaust Paintings

November 10

Miller Center for Contemporary Judaic Studies

Mother & ChildT he UM Miller Center for Contemporary Judaic Studies will host a special opening and reception for a series of paintings about the Holocaust by Tom Muhl, who will talk about how his experiences as a survivor are reflected in his art.

A painter, writer, and designer, Muhl was born in Hungary and survived the Holocaust as a 10-year-old child in the Budapest Ghetto in 1944. Following the 1956 Hungarian Revolution, he left his native country and went to England, where he studied at the Royal Academy of Art. He later moved to the United States, where he worked as an award-winning artist and creative director for prominent advertising agencies, including Young & Rubicam, J. Walter Thompson, and Bates Saatchi & Saatchi. He also created film scripts for documentaries and television as well as print advertising.

Fifty years ago the author fled the Russian invasion of Hungary, braving minefields and Russian tanks. Today he is a successful artist and writer, living in South Florida, dedicated to depicting the beauty and richness of his tropical environment. He knows that in the mind of the eternal exile, there is a fine line between courage and cowardice.

His paintings, now on display at the Miller Center, exhibit a sharp contrast between subject and color. Bright hues intertwine with grim storytelling – as the artist retells through his art the vision of a 10-year-old’s experiences during the Holocaust.

The event is free and open to the public and will take place on November 10, at 1:30 p.m. in the UM Miller Center, located at 5202 University Drive on the Coral Gables campus. Complimentary parking is available in the Pavia Garage or adjacent to the Merrick Building. For more information, please contact the Miller Center for Contemporary Judaic Studies at 305-284-6882.

Upcoming Events at the University of Miami

October 30 - November 1 TAXIDERMIA – contains three generational stories, about a grandfather, a father, and a son linked together by recurring motifs. The dim grandfather, an orderly during World War II, lives in his bizarre fantasies; he desires love. The huge father seeks success as a top athlete — a speed eater — in the postwar pro-Soviet era. The grandson, a meek, small-boned taxidermist, yearns for something greater: immortality. He wants to create the most perfect work of art of all time by stuffing his own torso. Historical facts and surrealism become intertwined as magical realism, like in the works of Gabriel Garcia Márquez or the Hungarian writer Lajos Parti Nagy; the script is based on two of the latter’s stories. Palfi added the third story, that of the taxidermist grandson. Please note: This film is extremely graphic. Viewer discretion is advised. Hungarian, English, and Russian with English subtitles. Admission is $6 for all University of Miami alumni, faculty, and staff, and is free for students. General admission is $8. The film screens on Friday, October 30 at 9:00 p.m., Saturday, October 31 at 4:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m., and Sunday, November 1 at 2:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.

October 30 - November 1 BIG FAN – Paul Aufiero (Patton Oswalt), a 35-year-old parking-garage attendant from Staten Island, is the self-described “world’s biggest Giants fan.” His family berates him for doing nothing with his life, but they don’t understand the depth of his love of the Giants or the responsibility his fandom carries. One night, Paul and his best friend Sal spot Giants star linebacker Quantrell Bishop. They follow him to a strip club, where they hang in the background, agog at their hero. Paul cautiously decides to approach him, stepping into the rarefied air of football stardom—and things do not go as planned. The fallout of this chance encounter brings Paul’s world crashing down around him as his family, the team, the media, and the authorities engage in a tug of war over Paul, testing his allegiances and calling into question everything he believes in. The film screens on Friday, October 30 at 7:00 p.m., Saturday, October 31 at 2:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m., and Sunday, November 1 at 4:00 p.m.

October 30 - November 1 HARRY POTTER AND THE HALF BLOOD PRINCE – In the sixth year at Hogwarts, in both wizard and muggle worlds, Lord Voldemort and his henchmen are increasingly active. With vacancies to fill at Hogwarts, Professor Dumbledore persuades Horace Slughorn to become the potions teacher. Harry Potter, together with Dumbledore, must face treacherous tasks to defeat his evil nemesis. Admission is $6 for all University of Miami alumni, faculty, and staff, and is free for students. General admission is $8. The film screens on Saturday, October 31 at 10:00 p.m. and Sunday, November 1 at 8:00 p.m.

HAMLET

Through October 31

Jerry Herman Ring Theatre

Hamlet

A Chilling Retelling of the Classic Shakespeare Drama! Arguably the greatest play ever written, Shakespeare's Hamlet is a riveting theatrical ghost story for Halloween. The King of Denmark is dead.  The kingdom is on the brink of ruin. The haunted young prince is driven to the edge of madness in his obsession to avenge his ghostly father’s death and save the nation. A postmodern thunderbolt telling of Shakespeare's thrilling tale travels a twisting route through the heart of darkness, and almost no one comes out the other side.
