Upcoming Events at the University of Miami
November 27 - 29 PARIS – Cédric Klapisch, the
beloved director of L’AUBERGE ESPAGNOLE, gathers together some
of the biggest actors in French cinema for a valentine to the city
of lights. While waiting for a heart transplant that could save
his life, Pierre (Romain Duris) reunites with his sister (Juliette
Binoche) and her lively children. This rediscovery of his family
and observation of the teeming streets outside his window give
Pierre hope, and a new sense of how he might spend the time still
left to him. A cinematic love letter to the city that seems to
hide a story behind every shop window, small alley, street market
or grand apartment building, the film explores the life and love
possible only in PARIS. French with English subtitles. Admission
is $6 for all University of Miami alumni, faculty, and staff, and
is free for students. General admission is $8. The film screens
on Friday, November 27 at 7:00 p.m., Saturday, November 28 at 4:15
and 9:00 p.m., and Sunday, November 29 at 3:00 and 7:45 p.m.
November 27 - November 29 COCO BEFORE CHANEL – This
is the story of Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel, who began
her life as headstrong orphan, and through an extraordinary journey
became the legendary couturier who embodied the modern woman and
became a timeless symbol of success, freedom and style. The film
portrays the formative years of Chanel’s life, the years Chanel
spent discovering and inventing herself. French with English subtitles.
Admission is $6 for all University of Miami alumni, faculty, and
staff, and is free for students. General admission is $8. The film
screens on Friday, November 27 at 9:30 p.m., Saturday, November
28 at 2:00 p.m. and 6:45 p.m. and Sunday, November 29 at 5:30 p.m.
December 4 - 6 ANTICHRIST – One of most celebrated
filmmakers of our time, Lars Von Trier is back with the beautiful,
terrifying, and altogether engrossing Antichrist. The
film was the talk of the 2009 Cannes Film Festival, where star
Charlotte Gainsbourg took home the award for Best Actress. A
grieving couple (two-time Oscar®-nominee
Willem Dafoe and Charlotte Gainsbourg) retreat to ’Eden,’ their
isolated cabin in the woods, where they hope to repair their
broken hearts and troubled marriage. But nature takes its course
and things go from bad to worse. Please note: This film is extremely
graphic. Viewer discretion is advised. Admission is $6 for all
University of Miami alumni, faculty, and staff, and is free for
students. General admission is $8. The film screens on Friday,
December 4 at 9:00 p.m., Saturday, December 5 at 4:00, 8:00
and 10:00 p.m., and Sunday, December 6 at 6:00 and 8:00
p.m.
December 4 - 6 TRUCKER – Diane Ford (Michelle
Monaghan), a vivacious and successful independent truck driver,
leads a carefree life of long-haul trucking, one night stands
and all-night drinking until the evening her estranged 11-year-old
son (Jimmy Bennett) shows up at her door. Peter hasn’t seen his
mother since he was a baby and wants Diane as little as she wants
him. But with his father Len (Benjamin Bratt) in the hospital,
Diane and Peter are stuck with each other – at least for a while.
Burdened with this new responsibility and seeing the life of
freedom she’s fought for jeopardized, Diane steps reluctantly
into her past and looks sidelong at a future that is not as simple
or straightforward as she had once believed. Admission is $6
for all University of Miami alumni, faculty, and staff, and is
free for students. General admission is $8. The film screens
on Friday, December 4 at 7:00 p.m., Saturday, December 5 at 6:00
p.m. and Sunday, December 6 at 4:00 p.m.
December 4 - 6 DON CARLO – Don Carlo is possibly
the most intense, deep, nuanced, rich, and masterful work of
the “mature” Giuseppe Verdi, an extensive and monumental showcase
of everything Verdi. It is also the Verdi opera that exists in
the most number of versions. The version of this “Grand Opera” that
opened the 2008-09 La Scala Opera Season is the 1884 Four Acts
version that Verdi reduced and changed into Italian from the
original 1867 Five Acts version in French. The story is based
on conflicts in the life of Carlos, Prince of Asturias, after
his betrothed Elisabeth of Valois was married instead to his
father Philip II of Spain as part of the peace treaty ending
the Italian War of 1551-1559 between the Houses of Habsburg and
Valois. Filmed opening night at the 2008 La Scala Opera House
in crystal clear High Definition, it is presented in stunning
5.1 surround sound, three hours and 22 minutes with
two intermissions. Admission is $18 for all University of Miami
alumni, faculty, and staff, and students. General admission is
$20. The opera screens on Saturday and Sunday, December 5 and
6, at 12 p.m.
