WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 17
Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science
The University of Miami’s Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science
and the Ocean Research and Education Foundation invite alumni to the second
event of the 2010 Sea Secrets lecture series. Join us for an entertaining
and educational evening with acclaimed author Trevor Corson, whose bestseller
The Secret Life of Lobsters was named a "Best Nature Book of the Year"

lobster fisherman in Maine before chasing a team of renegade lobster scientists
around New England for a year to write his book. He will share his insights
into the hilarious undersea antics of lobsters, the rugged lives of the fishermen
who catch them, and a rare conservation success story where fishermen and scientists
collaborated to protect this important resource in an age of vanishing seafood.
A guest judge on the Food Network’s hit TV show Iron Chef
America and a regular
guest on NPR, Trevor is also the author of The Story of
Sushi: An Unlikely Saga of Raw Fish and Rice, and will be signing copies of his books after the
talk.
The events, which are free and open to the public, are designed to provide
insight and information about the oceans, which cover two-thirds of our planet
and much of which are still an enigma. Programs take place in the Rosenstiel
School Auditorium, 4600 Rickenbacker Causeway on Virginia Key, beginning with
a reception at 5:30 p.m., followed by the lecture at 6:00 p.m.

UM CREATIVE WRITING PROGRAM HOSTS
A CRAFT-INTENSIVE WEEKEND
February 27 and 28
The University of Miami’s Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing Program honors the 50th teaching anniversary of its founding professor, Lester Goran, author of 14 books, by launching a weekend workshop series designed to engage the local writing community on February 27-28, 2010. Led by the MFA program’s distinguished faculty, alumni, and graduate teaching assistants, the weekend will guide participants on ways to break through their most daunting writing blocks, whether they are writing the great American novel or just beginning to explore the written word.
Sessions span the breadth of creative writing, including memoir, poetry on
and off the page, and the development of what John Gardner calls “the vivid
and continuous dream” in fiction. UM professors Jane Alison, Maureen Seaton,
Walter Lew, Mia Leonin, Peter Schmitt, and MFA program director M. Evelina
Galang, joined by Lois Wolfe and R. Zamora Linmark, introduce narrative techniques,
poetic traditions, and hybrid forms of writing through lectures, demonstrations,
and in-class exercises.
Write Now is sponsored by the Creative Writing Program, the Department of English, the College of Arts and Sciences, and the MALS program at the University of Miami, along with community partner Books & Books. For more information about seminars and breakout sessions with MFA students and alumni, visit the Web site at http://www.as.miami.edu/english/creativewriting/lestergoran/writenow.
Upcoming Events at the University of Miami
January 29 - 31 KILLING KASZTNER – the story
of a Hungarian Jew who tried to rescue the last million Jews
of Europe by negotiating face to face with Nazi leader Adolf
Eichmann. After Kasztner moved to Israel, many people accused

And after 50 years the assassin Ze’ev Eckstein breaks his silence.
Part real time investigation, part historical journey – the filmmaker
unearths the Kasztner story and its ramifications for the survivors,
his family and his country, exploring the very nature of history
itself, who writes it, how it is remembered, and what is at
stake for the present, and future. English and Hebrew with English
subtitles. Admission is $6 for all University of Miami alumni,
faculty, and staff, and is free for students. General admission
is $8. The film screens on Friday, January 29 at 7:00 p.m., Saturday,

with family members and a neighborhood of loyal friends and
dangerous enemies. After he meets the beautiful Manhattanite
Alessandra (Jenna Dewan), his determination to reach toward
a wider world and realize his musical dreams becomes even stronger.
But he is tied by loyalty to his friends and to his ex-Marine
brother, and by the expectations of his frustrated, angry father.
As Jay fights to break free of the cycles of anger and violence
that grip his life and his neighborhood, he learns that only
love can help him grasp his elusive chance at happiness, and
he comes to a new understanding that helps him take the long,
uncertain leap into his future. Admission is $6 for all University

The three will have their jerseys raised to the rafters of the BankUnited Center during halftime of the home game versus Duke on Wednesday, February 17, in recognition of their accomplishments.
The honored jerseys will hang alongside the retired jerseys of No. 24 Rick Barry (1962-65) and No. 40 Tim James (1995-99). Although the numbers reflected on the honored jerseys will not be retired, they will hang in recognition of the great contributions to Hurricanes basketball made by McClinton, Curnutt, and Hickox.

years,” says
men’s basketball head coach Frank Haith. “These three men in particular
have meant a lot to this program. They were truly instrumental to
