Urban Farmer Will Allen to Present 'Growing the Good Food Revolution'
Thursday, March 28
The University of Miami Office of Civic and Community Engagement presents an evening lecture featuring UM alumnus and honorary Doctor of Humane Letters, Will Allen.
Will Allen is an urban farmer who is transforming the cultivation, production, and delivery of healthy foods to under-served, urban populations. After a brief career in professional basketball and a number of years in corporate marketing at Procter & Gamble, Will returned to his roots as a farmer, using his retirement package to purchase a plot of inner-city land with greenhouses, where he established and functions as the CEO of the country's preeminent urban farm and nonprofit organization Growing Power. At Growing Power and in community food projects across the nation and around the world, Allen promotes the belief that all people, regardless of their economic circumstances, should have access to fresh, safe, affordable, and nutritious foods at all times. In 2008, Will was named a John D. and Katherine T. MacArthur Foundation Fellow, a "genius grant," only the second farmer ever to be so honored. In May 2012, he published the book, The Good Food Revolution:Growing Healthy Food, People, and Communities (Gotham Books).

Navigating David: A Treatise on Leadership and the Nation
Wednesday, March 27
It is generally accepted that Humanity has limits especially in the face of seemingly intractable difficulties. In this treatise, King David is chosen and examined as the authentic exemplar of the faithful political life because of his faith in God and the Nation. A nation may suffer because the leadership has erred or is corrupt. A nation may also suffer because the people are an erring people. In both instances, the leadership bears a responsibility to correct what is wrong. And that can only be done by wisdom.
The author, Lawrence Abraham is an educator and teaches International Relations, US foreign Policy and Sociology. Abraham has a PhD from the University of Miami and has been a consultant for the government and various private companies. Abraham is an expert in Conflict Resolution. His interests include political philosophy and political theology as well as Religious and Ethnic conflicts. Abraham is the founder of the Abraham Peace Foundation. The Foundation is actively involved in knowledge construction for Peace and Development.
