Alumni Weekend and Homecoming 2013
Committee Recruitment

How many times have you asked yourself, “I wonder what … is doing today?” and wanted to go back and relive your college experience. Would you like an opportunity to get back together with good friends, former study buddies, and fellow student organization members to reminisce about all the fun you had at UM? Well this is your opportunity to do that and more!

This year we are excited to celebrate the following milestone class reunions, the Class of 1963 – 50th Reunion, Class of 1988 – 25th Reunion, and Class of 2003 – 10th Reunion. Alumni Weekend and Homecoming is a success in large part because of the dedicated volunteers who take the time to assist us with recruitment and planning for reunion celebrations. We would love to have you become an active volunteer on a reunion committee.

Regardless of your graduation year, involvement background or career path, there is a great need for volunteers for Alumni Weekend and Homecoming 2013. The Office of Alumni Relations will work with you to find a role that suits your interests and availability.

Urban Farmer Will Allen to Present 'Growing the Good Food Revolution'

Thursday, March 28

Coral Gables

Will AllenThe University of Miami Office of Civic and Community Engagement presents an evening lecture featuring UM alumnus and honorary Doctor of Humane Letters, Will Allen.

Will Allen is an urban farmer who is transforming the cultivation, production, and delivery of healthy foods to under-served, urban populations. After a brief career in professional basketball and a number of years in corporate marketing at Procter & Gamble, Will returned to his roots as a farmer, using his retirement package to purchase a plot of inner-city land with greenhouses, where he established and functions as the CEO of the country's preeminent urban farm and nonprofit organization Growing Power. At Growing Power and in community food projects across the nation and around the world, Allen promotes the belief that all people, regardless of their economic circumstances, should have access to fresh, safe, affordable, and nutritious foods at all times. In 2008, Will was named a John D. and Katherine T. MacArthur Foundation Fellow, a "genius grant," only the second farmer ever to be so honored. In May 2012, he published the book, The Good Food Revolution:Growing Healthy Food, People, and Communities (Gotham Books).

Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science Campus

RIGHT WHALESCharles “Stormy” Mayo, M.S. ’68, Ph.D. ’73, Director, Right Whale Habitat Studies, Provincetown Center for Coastal Studies, will present at the 9th Annual Rosenstiel School Alumni Lecture, Right Whales at the Brink.

Right whales of the North Atlantic Ocean are the rarest of the great whales, clinging to existence on the very brink of extinction, threatened by entanglement in fishing gear and the insidious effects of climate change. The whales’ story, along with efforts by scientists and conservationists to save them, speaks to the issues of biodiversity, protection of the oceans, and the conflict between conservation and economic imperatives. In this illustrated presentation, Dr. Mayo will discuss the status of the right whales, their checkered history, and the work of his aerial and vessel survey teams to understand and protect them. Included in this discussion are the results of Dr. Mayo’s studies that have been used to change the way we manage the open ocean habitats of the Gulf of Maine where a remnant population of right whales still lives.

This lecture will take place on Wednesday, April 3, 2013 at the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science Campus auditorium at 6:00pm. Following the lecture there will be hors d’oeuvres and wine reception. This event is free and open to the public; however seating is limited.

Navigating David: A Treatise on Leadership and the Nation

Wednesday, March 27

Coral Gables

It is generally accepted that Humanity has limits especially in the face of seemingly intractable difficulties. In this treatise, King David is chosen and examined as the authentic exemplar of the faithful political life because of his faith in God and the Nation. A nation may suffer because the leadership has erred or is corrupt. A nation may also suffer because the people are an erring people. In both instances, the leadership bears a responsibility to correct what is wrong. And that can only be done by wisdom.

The author, Lawrence Abraham is an educator and teaches International Relations, US foreign Policy and Sociology. Abraham has a PhD from the University of Miami and has been a consultant for the government and various private companies. Abraham is an expert in Conflict Resolution. His interests include political philosophy and political theology as well as Religious and Ethnic conflicts. Abraham is the founder of the Abraham Peace Foundation. The Foundation is actively involved in knowledge construction for Peace and Development.
