Upcoming Films at the University of Miami

April 26 – 28 ROOM 237 — When The Shining, Stephen King's biggest critical and commercial success, was written it was a no-brainer to make it into a film. After an arduous production, the film, directed by Stanley Kubrick, received a wide release in the summer of 1980; the reviews were mixed, but the box office, after a slow start, eventually picked up. End of story? Hardly. In the 30 years since the film's release, a considerable cult of Shining devotees has emerged, fans that claim to have decoded the film's secret messages addressing everything from the genocide of Native Americans to a range of government conspiracies. Rodney Ascher's wry and provocative Room 237 fuses fact and fiction through interviews with cultists and scholars, creating a kaleidoscopic deconstruction of Kubrick's still-controversial classic. "One of the great movies about movies," raves Rob Nelson, film critic for Variety. Room 237 screens Friday, April 26 at 6:45 p.m.; Saturday, April 27 at 1:30 p.m., 3:30 p.m., and 5:30 p.m.; and Sunday, April 28 at 3:30 p.m.

April 26 – 28 THE SHINING — In The Shining aspiring novelist Jack Torrance accepts a position as the off-season custodian at an elegant but eerie hotel so he can write undisturbed. But shortly after Jack, his wife, and his young son settle in, the ominous hotel wields its sinister power. The Shining screens Friday, April 26 at 8:45 p.m.; Saturday, April 27 at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday, April 28 at 5:30 p.m.

General admission is $9. Admission is $7 for seniors, University of Miami alumni, faculty, non-UM students and staff. Free for UM students. To purchase tickets online or for more information, visit www.cosfordcinema.com or call 305-284-4861.
