Upcoming Films at the University of Miami
May 17 – 19 SIMON KILLER — From the makers of the indie hit, Martha Marcy May Marlene, comes one of the most talked-about films from Sundance.
The follow-up to Antonio Campos' critically acclaimed film, Afterschool, Simon Killer is an erotic and psychological portrait of Simon (Brady Corbet of Melancholia, Martha, Marcy May Marlene), a well-educated, handsome and seemingly sympathetic college graduate with just a hint of something off putting. Recently heartbroken, Simon travels to Paris to clear his head. After several days of wandering aimlessly, Simon finds himself drawn into a sex parlor and has a sexual encounter with an exotic prostitute, Victoria. The chemistry builds between the two until they find themselves in a serious relationship, one that leads to blackmail, betrayal and the ultimate revelation of Simon's true nature.
"One of the boldest and most provocative films we'll see in the coming year. A chilling character study... hauntingly gorgeous... entrancing and provocative..." raves Karina Longworth of LA Weekly.
Simon Killer screens Friday, May 17 at 9 p.m.; Saturday, May 18 at 4:15 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.; and Sunday, May 19 at 2:30 p.m. and 6:45 p.m.
May 17 – 19 TO THE WONDER — The anticipated new feature from renowned filmmaker Terrence Malick, To the Wonder lyrically explores the complexities of love in all its forms. Parisian single mother Marina (Olga Kurylenko) and Midwestern tourist Neil (Ben Affleck) fall madly in love in France and relocate to Oklahoma with Marina's young daughter to start a new life together. As their relationship wans and her visa nears expiration, Marina makes the acquaintance of a priest and fellow exile (Javier Bardem) who is struggling with his faith, while Neil renews a relationship with his childhood sweetheart, Jane (Rachel McAdams).
"FOUR STARS - 100 per cent pure, unadulterated Malick, an absorbing, thoughtful,
moving meditation on the things that matter," raves film critic Ian Freer of Empire magazine.
To the Wonder screens Friday, May 17 at 6:45 p.m.; Saturday, May 18 at 2 p.m. and 6:15 p.m. and Sunday, May 19 at 4:30 p.m. and 8:45 p.m.
General admission is $9. Admission is $7 for seniors, University of Miami alumni, faculty, non-UM students and staff. Free for UM students. To purchase tickets online or for more information, visit www.cosfordcinema.com or call 305-284-4861.
