October 18 - 19 BLACK BREAD — The Spanish selection for the 89th Academy Awards for Best Foreign Film, Black Bread is set in the war-ravaged Catalan countryside of the early 1940s where a local man is accused of murder and his son sets out to find the truth. Eleven-year-old Andreu stumbles upon a crushed wagon in the underbrush at the foot of a high cliff and witnesses the dying moments of the man and boy inside. When police suspect Andreu's father of foul play he goes into hiding and Andreu is sent to live with relatives. There, the frightened boy creates a fantasy life, but is forced to confront a world of adult deception, festering hatreds and the war's monstrous consequences. Reminiscent of Pan's Labyrinth and adored by audience and critics alike, Black Bread won an unheard of number of prizes, including 9 Goya Awards and 13 Gaudí Awards. The screening Saturday will feature an introduction by Linda Ehrlich and a roundtable discussion with Yvonne Gavela, Miguel Angel Balsa Marin, Elena Grau Lleveria, and Linda Ehrlich. Black Bread screens Tuesday, October 15 at 7:00 p.m., Saturday, October 12 at 5:30 p.m.

October 18 - 20 INFORMANT — a fascinating portrait of Brandon Darby, a radical left-wing activist turned FBI informant. In 2005, Darby became an overnight hero when he traveled to Katrina-devastated New Orleans and braved toxic floodwaters to rescue a stranded friend. Soon after, he co-founded Common Ground, a successful grassroots relief organization. But over the next few years, he began hiding a shocking secret. Darby revealed he was an FBI informant and renounced his left-wing past. The only film with access to Darby since his public confession, Informant meticulously constructs a picture of his life – before and after the many death threats he has received - through interviews and tense reenactments starring Darby himself. Darby's version of events is accompanied - and often contradicted - by acquaintances and expert commentators, posing complicated questions about trust and the nature of reality. In addition to trying to unlock the mystery of Brandon Darby, Informant offers a powerful insider look at the hidden use of informants in contemporary America – an especially timely issue in light of the recent leaks about government surveillance. Informant screens Friday, October 18 at 6:45 p.m., Saturday, October 19 at 1:30 p.m. and 8:00 p.m., Sunday October 20 at 3:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.

October 18 - 20 THERESE —François Mauriac's legendary 1927 novel of French provincial life has been gloriously brought to the screen by the inestimable Claude Miller in his final film. Sumptuously photographed to capture the full beauty of the pine-forested Landes area in southwest France, Therese is a beautifully conceived drama of exquisite taste. Marvelously played by the luminous Audrey Tautou, Thérèse is a heroine hewn from the same stock as Madame Bovary or Anna Karenina, suffocated by her provincial marriage. Thérèse has married less for love than for convenience, but it is not long before the casual disinterestedness shown her by her arrogant husband, Bernard (Gilles Lellouche), sets her mind in motion. Life is easy at first, as Bernard's pinewood estates keep them both in the lap of luxury. But when Thérèse's best friend Anne (Anaïs Demoustier), who also happens to be Bernard's younger sister, falls madly in love with a handsome young Portuguese man, Thérèse begins to see what she has been missing in her life. Corralled by Bernard's family into persuading Anne to forego her planned nuptials, she begins to see first-hand the awesome power of passionate love, as Anne will go to any length to keep her lover by her side. Soon, Thérèse begins her own fight against the oppressive Desqueyroux family. Therese screens Friday, October 18 at 8:30 p.m., Saturday, October 19 at 3:00 p.m., Sunday October 20 at 4:45 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.

General admission is $9. Admission is $7 for seniors, University of Miami alumni, faculty, non-UM students and staff. Free for UM students. To purchase tickets online or for more information, visit www.cosfordcinema.com or call 305-284-4861.
