2014 Black Student Scholarship ReceptionThe University of Miami Black Alumni Society and the Woodson Williams Marshall Association invite you to attend the 2014 Black Student Scholarship Reception featuring Lauryn Williams, B.B.A. '05, Olympic Sprinter and Bobsledder.

As a student at the University of Miami, Lauryn Williams was a nine-time All-American in track and field. She is a three-time Olympian in the sport, winning a silver medal in 2004 and becoming a gold medalist in 2012. At the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics, Williams won a silver medal in women's bobsled, becoming only the second American and fifth person in history to win medals in Summer and Winter Olympic Games.

The program recognizes undergraduate students who were nominated for the Black Alumni Scholarship and the WWMA Scholarship. A networking reception will follow the program.

LECTURE: Mindfulness, Compassion, And Real Happiness

Join us for a lecture and conversation with Sharon Salzberg on Tuesday, March 25 at 5 p.m. at the Newman Alumni Center. Sharon will discuss her new book Real Happiness at Work: Meditations for Accomplishment, Achievement, and Peace and discuss ways to improve work life through mindfulness, compassion, and ingenuity. Sharon is one of the world's leading meditation and spiritual teachers. She cofounded the Insight Meditation Society and the ancient Buddhist practices of mindfulness and loving kindness are the foundations of her work.

This lecture is part of the Mindfulness Lecture Series of the UMindfulness Research & Practice Initiative ( The Initiative is an interdisciplinary collaboration across the University of Miami to engage novel implementation and cutting-edge brain research on mindfulness/contemplative training.


Virginia Key

The 2014 Sea Secrets lecture series presented by the University of Miami Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science and The Ocean Research and Education Foundation will host distinguished scientists and explorers to enlighten the South Florida community on our blue planet – from unraveling the mysteries of tiger sharks and drugs from the sea to protecting the breathtaking biodiversity that lies beneath, and so much more.

Sea Secrets kicked off on January 15 with a lecture on the enigmatic tiger shark by R.J. Dunlap Marine Conservation Program Director Neil Hammerschlag. The lectures, which run through May 14, are free and open to the public and designed to provide insight and information about the oceans that cover two-thirds of our planet to a non-scientific audience.

Programs take place in the Rosenstiel School auditorium, 4600 Rickenbacker Causeway, Virginia Key, beginning with a reception at 5:30 p.m., followed by a lecture at 6:00 p.m. All events are free and open to the public.

There is no task on Earth more important than maintaining its diversity and the ecological processes that underlie our survival, economic and social well-being. Unfortunately, the world's oceans are now gravely threatened, and are likely to undergo profound changes in our lifetime. During this lecture, Dr. Norse will briefly summarize the problem and discuss at length the solution that the Marine Conservation Institute offered at the Third Marine Protected Areas Congress in Marseille, France in October 2013. It is called the Global Ocean Refuge System (GLORES).

He has worked with leading journalist and film teams including CNN’s Anderson Cooper, Yann Arthus Bertrand, and National Geographic, and delivered projects for many of the top marine conservation organizations including WildAid, Shark Savers, Conservation International, The Nature Conservancy and Pew Environment Group. His award winning work has been featured with National Geographic, BBC, New York Times, Huffington Post, Washington Post, WIRED and numerous other print and online publications.

Cheer on the 'Canes Men's Basketball Team in Spain this Summer!


UM BasketballThe University of Miami men's basketball team will embark on a nine-night, 10-day summer basketball tour of Spain from August 12-22, 2014. Beginning the trip in Madrid, UM will engage in an educational excursion that will also include four games, sightseeing and community service opportunities. Beethoven on the Beach: Free Outdoor Concerts


Mei Mei LuoOrchestra Miami is proud to continue its series of Free Outdoor Concerts, with three performances of "Beethoven on the Beach, Part III: Clash of the Titans". These concerts are presented as a gift to the community, completely free of charge. The concerts are co-sponsored by the City of Sunny Isles Beach, the City of Miami Beach and Atlantic Broadband.

"Beethoven on the Beach, Part III: Clash of the Titans" features works by Rossini, Mendelssohn and Beethoven, conducted by Orchestra Miami's Artistic Director, Elaine Rinaldi, B.M. '89. This year's concert begins with the light-hearted Overture to La Scala di Seta by Gioacchino Rossini, followed by the unforgettable Concerto for Violin in E Minor, Op. 64 by Felix Mendelssohn, featuring Orchestra Miami's Concert Master, Mei Mei Luo, M.M. '07, as the soloist. The concert ends with Beethoven's joyous Symphony N. 2 in D Major, Op. 36.

The University of Miami Summer Scholars Program is a three-week program for highly motivated high school sophomores and juniors.
